I recently aquired a 1994 1.8 SOHC Galant saloon, or sedan, whatever. It has a slight rattle coming from the area of the camshaft timing belt. Doesn't sound very serious, but it's annoying to say the least, as the car is otherwise in excellent condition. Engine runs well, doesn't use any oil, and the bodywork is virtually rust free. Not familiar with this engine, (the first Mitsubishi I've owned) but as far as I can see, it could be coming from the cambelt tensioner, the water pump, or possibly the oil pump. I assume it's driven from that end of the crankshaft. I'm certain it's not coming from the camshaft itself, as it's definitely lower down the engine. Running the engine with the alternator removed made no differerence whatsoever, so I know that isn't the cause. A new cambelt was fitted at 57k, and as the car has now done
107k, I'm going to fit a new cambelt shortly. It makes sense to sort the rattle out at the same time. Maybe someone can tell me the most likely cause. If it's a common fault, it might pay me to get what's needed before I start the job. TIA. Mike.- posted
