309 Mi16

Brought one today and they're fecking quick (well relatively). Unfortunately its not mine, but i'll be helping to turn it into a stage car, and then be part of the service crew for events.

Cant wait :)

Apologies if you dont care, but i'm quite excited :)

Yep ... agree with that. The one i chased ran out of puff at 90mph .... the guy driving was wearing a big ski jacket and didn't half look sheepish when the 730 passed him. .... At least it wasn't the ax, that would have been humiliation for him.

How do you know it was an Mi16 convert?

Why does it have to be a conversion?

It doesn't have to have been a conversion. Peugeot made a 309 gti 16 which had the mi16 engine as standard. They're near enough impossible to find though :(

Easy to find if you go to France, only ever made them LHD though.

Because it was RIDICULOUSLY unlikely to be a pukka GTi 16v, which would also be a LHD import.

Possibly, but there were quite a few imported when they were new. I've seen rarer cars than that in the UK on the road so it's not impossible.

Ah, but they weren't badged as Mi16, they were GTi 16v weren't they?

I'm sure you're right about not having a Mi16 badge, I think they might just have been badged GTi 16 or 16s rather than 16v though.

Sweet :)

I'd be very surprised if it was a real Gti 16, not only because their very rare , in England at least but they certainly don't run out of puff at 90.

I have a 205 Mi16 on a 1.9 box as my run around while I get a few other jobs finished, 75-80 ish in 2nd so at 90 in 3rd it's just starting to get going.

maybe it was shagged but I would suspect it was just a 1.9 8v.

Trust me, they dont run out of puff at 90! And i think a standard 730 would have trouble beating an 8v GTi anyway! Either you were dreaming, you are lying or it didnt have the Mi16 lump. I think any of the 3 are possible!

His AX would piss on your 309 Mi16 ;)

Lets face it, that AX would piss on an F360.

Bwahahaha.

I didn't at the time ... but saw it advertised two weeks later in auto-trader as a Mi16 conversion "needing t.l.c"

Having just read up on the Mi16 engines .... it surely must have been knackered if a large barge like 730i could pass it.

The normal 309 gti does loose out to my ax, but only after 50mph .... they are still quicker than cavalier gsi2000 and 16 valve astra gte's though. (Good old french tin foil).

How high does the standard mi16 engine rev to, how high can they rev (with modifications). The tu3s in mine will rev to 8250rpm, but seems to loose torque after

7500rpm (should have fitted a 295 degree cam not 285).

Well it happily pulls to 6500rpm but i'd imagine it would go pass that if you let it, but TBH its not really needed. It pulls fairly hard till about

5000rpm, then it comes on cam and goes mental. Sounds great as well. If you want to know anything about this Mi16 engine ask Matt (aka Saab 900 blokey) since he used to have one that weighed in at 200+bhp in the BX 16v. If he's back about sometime soon, i may well be asking him a few questions!
