And today, I've been mostly holding up the traffic at Brands Hatch

First ever trackday I attended. I managed to avoid using the MX-5 as earth moving equipment, although I did have a couple of brown trouser moments when I overcooked it at Paddock Hill Bend. But I didn't spin the car :).

It was a lot of fun, although it did show that the suspension has a few miles on it. Brakes (original 1.6 disks with uprated, non-EBC pads) were fine, didn't get any fade but then again, you don't want to scrub off too much speed in an MX-5 anyway.

Still not quite sure if I'll keep the MX-5 and buy yet another runabout or go for something like an e30 318is. Not too much power, decent handling etc blah blah. But if I'm keeping the MX-5, I guess I'd need to rebush the suspension with some polybushes, replace the dampers and springs and get some 15" wheels with better tyres...

It would be tempting to go for something a bit more powerful, but as the instructor I booked pointed out, something fairly slow but well balanced like an MX-5 is actually a better car. As he pointed out when an Evo FQ-400 flew past "the guy's actually not that brilliant a driver but the car makes up for a lot".

Anyway, I guess I better look into booking another trackday next month.

Sir might like to look into when they'll next be doing drifting down at Lydd circuit, as it's not that far from you.

I believe they do the odd trackday down at Lydden as well, but not sure whether or not you can do drifting there... but again it's not a million miles away from where you are.

Silly question, but is there a point in having an MX5, *two* RX7s

*and* a runabout? ;-)

I'd probably looking to get rid of at least one RX7, YMMV of course.

It will do... but the one time that it doesn't, he'll be looking at a complete write off I should think, the speed he'll be going at.

Good stuff.

Accompanied by the sound of a chisel on slate Timo Geusch, managed to produce the following words of wisdom

Good man.

Shove some decent bushes in the MX-5. It'll be fine.

I'm not sure if I could resist a V8 engined MX-5... There's a nutter in Northwich who seems to be putting Rover V8s in 'em on a regular basis.

No plan to do drifting at the moment unless I sort out an LSD for the MX-5.

There's on there in May and I'm planning to attend...

The only point in having the MX-5 is that I want to use it to learn how to drive on a track properly. A 300+ bhp RX-7 isn't that suited to the task IMHO for the same reason you mention below. Later on in the program, yes.

I was hoping to use it as a runabout as well and most of the time it does the job OK.

Indeed. Hence the current need for something like an MX-5 :)

Probably, yes.

I can see the appeal but for what I intend to use the MX-5 it'll be counterproductive.

That still doesn't answer the question... ;-)

If you want a soft top, you've got an RX7 *and* an MX5...

If you want a quick rotary engined car, you've got an RX7 *and* an RX7 convertible...

If you want to do trackdays, all three would probably be good at that, but I can understand the reluctance to lob something worth several grand into the wall.

So... if you're still working up in the smoke and therefore probably not using a car, (never mind three, potentially four), that much, why keep all of the above... unless of course the intention is to get your trackday wings in something more disposable and then just revert to just the two RX7s.

So I clearly need at least a three-rotor Eunos Cosmo as well :).

Well, the convertible is not going anywhere near the track, especially not since Beav & son worked their magic on the paint.

*ding*

That's the badger.

Indeed, sounds like a good idea to me. I've been wanting to take my RX-7 to a trackday for a while, but when a mate got a £2000+ bill just for sliding his Porsche 911 into the gravel on one, I've been a bit wary! (Incidentally that £2000 was just for cosmetic damage, it doesn't include stuff like tyre and brake wear)

It's not only that - going around Brands in an MX-5 even with the loud pedal wearing a hole in the floorpan, you still have enough time to think. With an FD and not much track skills, chances are you'll overcook it properly. And that's what I don't want...
