The Audi after a month or so, mini-review.

Mini-mini review - It's not that bad.

Engine is smooth and quiet, quieter than the Volvo's 5 pot but I don't know if it's as smooth, hard to tell.

Tiptronic box is good at nicely slurred auto shifts but not so hot at deciding what you're asking it to do, wafting along gently it's unnoticeable, but if a bit of overtaking action is called for it tends to drop it down two or three gears when one would do. This was a pain in the arse when I first got the car but it's easy enough to anticipate after a few miles. The tiptronic shifty thing is a gimmick really, it works, but the delay between clicking the lever and something happening is irritating, so I don't use it that much. Having said that, it is ok when hooning.

Seats are ok, nowhere near as good as the Volvo ones, but the Audi has the sports leather jobs in. Comfy, yes, but probably not great for a 600 mile day. I'll try 'em to Czech sometime soon. Shame it's not got the heated seats really, but it's one of the first 500 A6 Avants made and an ex-Audi demo car so it's weird spec. It's the only one I've seen with black roof rails instead of the silver ones.

quattro rocketh mightily, although it can suffer a bit from wind-up when cold turning out of junctions. I'm going to give it a full diff oil change sometime soon.

Suspension is typical VAG. It's got the 'Sports' suspension on so it's a bit less queasily wobblesome than a normal A6, but it could be vastly improved, probably by a set of Mr Billy Stein's finest bobble reducers.

MPG 19-22 in town, 30-32 on a run. I'm averaging 25 mpg in it, so it's slightly better than the Volvo on average - but a lot slower. Super Unleaded is worth the extra.

Aircon works fine. No complaints.

Brakes work rather well, but the pedal is typically overservoed.

Steering is a bit numb, but accurate enough. I suspect this could be down to the 4wd. Not many messages to read as the thing is just gripping.

So, to sum up, it's nice, but it's not as good as some would have you believe. I think I'll run it for the winter and see what happens.

Top Trumps Time! - Audi vs merc.

Mines diesel, that's 1-0 to the audi

Gearbox is always smooth and fast, and nearly always in the right gear. 1-1

Did 600 miles today. Still feel fine. 1-2

Rear drive. Proper rear drive. And no wind up or backlash. 1-3

Soft but not rolly would describe mine. Probably be improved with Mr Billy-Stein's finest - so no score here - 1-3

25-30 in town, 35-50 on a run. 1-4

still 1-4

Brake by wire. 1-5

Light but with feeling - 1-6

It's an audi. For people with iPhones, manbags and boyfriends. And jobs in architecture or advertising.

How is that a win for the Merc?

Seriously? That's terrifying, unless it's an electric car with drive-motor braking. Good for gizmo points, I suppose.

Yeah, I don't think brake by wire is a good thing... especially with that bollocks brake-assist shit.

RECOUNT!

Shit, that means I've got completely the wrong car. I'm not gay, I won't allow anything made by Apple in the house (or the car) and I can't abide advertising. What is this manbag of which you speak?

Isn't it where you store bodies prior to suitable disposal?

Ah.

It has a backup hydraulic system, but braking is controlled by a pedal position sensor and an electric hydraulic pressure pump thing (that's rather expensive). Was replaced at facelift with standard servo system as the pump tends to last

It's a kind of satchel that is smaller than your courier/messenger/ record bag. Used to carry hair gel and iPhones.

Erm.. um.. oh I have a bag like that which I use for carrying my lunch to work. I like it because I can roll it up and stick it in the bottle cage of my bike on the way home after lunch has been consumed. No hair gel or iPhone though.

Bollocks to that. If whatever it is doesn't fit in my pockets, it doesn't really need to be carried.

Usual check for me before going out is as follows; keys, cash, phone.

Manbags. Sheesh.

Fits nicely behind the drivers seat of an audi...

But how can you feel warped discs through it, stuff like that?

fishman gurgled happily, sounding much like they were saying:

If you can't feel warped disks, does it matter that they're warped?

Anyway - surely most of that warped disk feeling is through the seat or steering wheel, not the pedal?

Which reminds me - I really must get round to swapping the warped pattern disks off the front of the Saab...

You're just old.

My manbag proudly holds my iPod on the way to work. Although it also holds my munchies and hi-vis which wouldn't go in my pockets. No hair gel though, that stays at home.

Luckily I own a V8 (and have a wife), so my hetrosexuality is automatically reinstated. Hopefully.

Better give the Audi to me. I've got a couple of Apple products.

Straight swap for my 106?

Has it got the electro-hydraulic rack? If so you can dial out some of the assistance with VAG-COM, my Ibiza is set to the highest setting below off (for some strange reason the higher the setting the less assistance, so maybe it's miss named and should be steering weight).

Dunno, probably. I'll plug it in and have a look. It's not that bad tbh, it's just numb.

What is it Payne Senior does again ?

I reckon that collectively you must tick allodem boxes. He does have a Manbag, right ?
