Argh!

And of course the old 230 being a 2.3 I4 donk too.

I had this half baked idea that the C180K and C200Ks were both the supercharged Mitsibishi engine, but the C230K was a 2.3 I4 supercharged. However I've only really paid attention to the Mercedes Benz CDI range...

Many dealers suck

Really? Which bits other than the usual bumpers and trims? W210s were all cheap rusty steel, W211s are a mix of steel and aluminium.

Nice in its own way, but better to find a newer 55AMG with the NA V8 - much nicer sounding, just as expensive to run.

It's true on an X350. Perhaps not an ally XJ, but all the XJ40 based stuff has a daft boot.

My Dad's current X350 doesn't strike me as being especially quiet, in comparison to my 406. The XJ40s seemed stupidly quiet. I think everyone else has caught up and the low profile optional tyres on my Dad's don't help.

Aye.

Bah. Confusion! Substitute X350 through all this for X308...

The budget is £12k remember, and it has to have a small engine.

£12k, up to 3lt. Hardly 'small'.

Basic, but not exactly 'crap old Volvo' is it? And you have a much larger amount of power to amuse yourself with to take your mind off it ;-)

Heh, no, but they're *very* basic compared with the A4 sat on the drive at the moment.

Compared to the 6.2 V8 Tim is saying to look for, it is quite small heh!

I struggle to beleive the equivalent Audi would be nicer heh! Also, the Audi like 3ltr range petrol engines aren't even close to a patch on the BMW straight sixes - which are the best available in that sector by a fair way.

C55AMG with a 6.2 V8?

Ah, I was thinking about the new C63. I assume the C55 has a 5.5 V8 or something.

indeed!

Little bit of german quality there. All a bit leggier than you would like but all within budget.

No, don't like them.

As above, engine too big.

Another S. No thanks.

Erm.

Oh, another S-cass.

Did you see above - 'I don't really like modern Mercs'.....

I'm sure they're great cars, but the Krauts really can't do leather and wood in the same way the Brits and Wops can.

Umm, 3 years old means 2005 onwards dude :-)

Meh, trying to be helpful with actual sensible cars here. Most unlike me.

What's sensible about a leggy, 5 year old S-class?

It has about 200 years, or 400 lightyears worth of use left in in, and it is a fairly nice place to be. Shame about the age, you could do worse than a Lexus GS 430
