Attn MeatballTurbo - alternative toyota for you

Got a mate dumping a H reg Celica, plain old cloth 2.0 but in lovely condition (he's a mechanic)

Wanna make an offer? He's just bought a Range Rover as he needs a tow car...

If I was going for a Celica, it would need to be a little newer (91/92/93), and leather if poss (unlikley I know).

Cheers for the offer, sounds a cracker if it has been mechanic owned.

It's either buy something that will need a major service item soon, cheap, and get the job done, or spend a little more on nice historied slightly newer motor closer to my maximum.

And closer to home if possible (you are on the wrong side of the pennines ISTR).

Thatnks for the heads up though. Will make a mental note incase nothing else closer shows up.

But if he's 'dumping' it, surely that means he'll take £100 for it, then if it dies in a month, well, it doesn't matter too much :)

Car's now in derbyshire - a nice trip across the pennines and a nice trip back, mate's moved from Hull to Nottingham recently.

Hmm, a little better.

I'm trying to get local, but what colour out of interest?

Red IIRC

Hmm, nice, as long as not too faded. I have set my heart on a Prelude, an MR2 or an MX5, the Celica is a distant 4th though, because I do find the seats comfy (had a set from an ST162 in my old Estelle).

love the seating position of the celica! so confortable and feels just right to me. new celica is even better :)

New celica is an excellent car - practical, quick, nice to look at and reliable, all in one!

Oh yes, but out of my budget I'm afraid, for about another 8 years.

ah well never mind, keep it in mind in 8 years time eh :)

i'm aiming for an S2000 when they get sensible money

Agreed on all counts, bar quick.

Weren't they supposed to be bringing out a Turbo version of the VVTi engine ? Current nasty-revvy lump only makes a meagre 189bhp at sixteen squillion rpm.

If you think you can run a Ferrari on £1k / year, then you're sadly mistaken.

You have looked at the cost of consumables and belt changes, haven't you? - even using an independent specialist, I'd be budgeting 2-3 times what you reckon for Ferrari running costs.

Of course, the 911, being little more than a jumped up VW can be run on a much lower budget.

That was what I was quoting according to a Manchester indy, and their fixed price service/regular work prices in a magazine.

Nicely optimisitc.

Add on cambelt changes - which, on some models, is an engine out job, and needs doing every 2 years - so you're up another grand on your figures at this point - or £600 plus on models where it doesn't come out. Tyres, brakes - lots of money. Fuel economy - don't mention it.

Seriously - if you're looking to run a Ferrari properly, then I'd be looking at £2.5k / year minimum, with anything I didn't spend being put towards the 'big one' that will come along every couple of years.

There's lots of 'cheap' Ferraris out there that have been run by people who think they can do it on a budget, which are being sold cheap once people realise what they've got themselves into.

Talking of Ferraris, there's a place on my round that specialise in Ferraris - servicing and repairs mainly, might sell the odd one, and they've got a cool old Ferrari (wouldn't have a clue what model, but it's a police car - don't think it's even a replica, think it's an original cop car). Anyway, my point was that, from seeing inside their workshops, they appear to be a very professional outfit, and I'd definitely take mine to them if I had one! GTO Engineering, near Twyford, if anyone's in the area.

My mate's MR2 Roadster had the 140bhp VVTI and whilst it wasn't desperately quick, the redline wasn't *that* high! Something like around 7000rpm - nothing as near as manic as VTECs and the like though.

Like I said, it's the next step up, so when I spend the money on the=20 car, I will be prepared to spend the money on the fixing.

When I can afford to buy/insure a ferrari, I will probably at the point=20 of holding shares in a Petroleum company anyway.

The 189 version is a BUNCH higher - it doesn't even come on-cam until

6200rpm !!!! Redline is somewhere around 9k IIRC.
