Breaking/Scrap value

I have (my girlfriends) a 2002 Saxo 1.1 which was involved in a head on accident about a month ago.

There is no insurance claim as the other driver bailed. She has been told to scrap it, but it's still on the driveway, lowering the tone of the neighbourhood.

The front is unusable (I think) as is the drivers door. All the other doors are in good condition and it had only done 17000 miles so the interior is still in good nick, as was the outside of the car.

What is the best way to get value out of it? There has been a man round who offered £200, which we refused.

I've taken a few bits off and we're planning on selling them on ebay (wing mirrors, rear lights etc) But how much can we realistically sell it to a breaker for and how should we go about doing it?

Um, so why aren't you claiming on the insurance ?

They'll pay out the £4000 or whatever the car is worth, and voila. Yes, your premiums will go up a little for the next few years - but nowhere near as much as the £4000 you stand to lose by just getting rid of it for scrap !

You're paying for your insurance premium - use it !

Or, spend some money and get it fixed at a local backstreet bodyshop. Yes, it'll cost you a chunk of money - but again, nowhere near as much as the £4000 you stand to lose by just getting rid of it for scrap !

She was TPFT. The other driver was insured but they ran away. No driver = no claim.

It's going through the MIB.

Whether they chose to stick around or not, isn't really your problem.

Then surely it's upto the Police and your insurance company to find the other driver !

Hey that's not too bad for a woman drivers car!! the odd small parking dint..... looks pretty normal condition, where's the accident damage???

sorry couldn't resist!!!

glad to hear she's ok, and sorry no idea how to gain maximum £££, but is the engine good? should be worth a good few hundred with the low mileage (even if the rads fecked etc)

Including me. I figure it's just not worth the extra half a grand(give or take)to stump up on a car that's worth less than 2k.

Yep on cheap stuff, but something worth 4 grand I'd certainly go fully comp.

Mind you I'm over 30 and pay peanuts...

Nope, I reckon the engine took the majority of the force. The front of the block is dented, and it doesn't start. The starter motor was turning, though!

Oh, and the gearbox is fubar'd as well.
