cresta advice needed

thanks burgerman, but i lack experiance on studs. i didnt know that the studs would cut there own splines into the hole. my other concern is that i might not get the holes at the right angle to the axle. the front ones would not be a problem as i can remove the part and drill it on a bench drill at the day centre, but the rear ones (looking in the manual) look as though they have the complete halfshafts fixed to them as one piece, so drilling these may be a problem.. unless any one knows better.

Knock one out. They come out pretty easy. Take it to a few places and just match it up. Take a micrometer to be sure. If the threads different then get nuts too. Should be easyish. Many us based cars use imperial threads anyway so a chrysler dodge dealer, or GM etc or even ford US dealers should have something even if Vauxhaul dont. Try on the net too. After that only then bother redrilling etc.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "nothometoday" saying something like:

They're usually just pulled into the the holes in the halfshaft flange by the application of the nut. If they've been there for decades they might look as if they're part of the halfshaft, but they're not really. A wallop or several with a lump hammer will move them, but apply some heat and plusgas first. Corrosion might have bit into the splines, both in the stud and the flange, if so, you might have to go for the next size up and enlarge the hole to suit. If you're lucky, you might find some studs with a slightly larger cross-sectional splined area with the same thread as the original which will pull into the original holes.

thanks for that m8, i took the front ones out yesterday, came out with one tap of a hammer, tried to get some from vauxhall yesterday, they think that one from a newer car might fit, but i will have to buy one before i can compare it with mine, and if it is not the same then i would have spent £6.87 for nothing.

so i am in the process of emailing some online companies with all of the meassurements from the old ones.
