DIY Aerodynamics

Anyone messed about with flat undertrays? I know Matt did on his C900 but he's disappeared. I've figured out how one could be fixed on without drilling umpteen holes in the floor, but I'm more wondering about cooling.

Hi Doki,

This is a very dibatable subject as to whether there are enough advantages in areodynamics when fitting undertrays. You are right to think of cooling as any changes to the air intakes, bonnet and under airflow can have a dramatic effect. When I had my original metal bonnet I had Aston Martin style vents crafted into the metal work to improve cooling. Couldn't tell the difference, as I had jsut fitted a charger at the same time. When I replaced it for a carbon bonnet without vents the cooling was better, even with the sound proofing on. I also know an Audi Quattro specialist who said the 80's style massive intake bonnet on a standard Audi seriously messed up the airflow. If the bottom is blocked it will have to rely on the grill as a sole intake. By the way what is a C900?

Almost all undertrays I've looked at pretty much only cover the middle of the engine bay, leaving space to the sides presumably for airflow and suchlike.

Saab 900 from 1979-1992 (for the tin tops, different years for the cabrios).

I was thinking more of a complete flat underside. Matt's was carbon fibre IIRC and incorporated a diffuser at the back.

Some extend further than that, but I don't know of a production car with a full undertray (maybe the fuel consumption cars have em - priuses etc).

you can see what a MK5 Golf has there.

He never actually did it did he? I remember he was planning it...

But then we are talking about the same guy who built a TVR Cerbera with a Supra 3.0 twin turbo engine and box in it... So he probably did.

Yes, and the mark four Astra Eco4 has one too.

But the trouble is once you start making a big change to the aerodynamics you run the risk of screwing something up.

I can't access the link, this notebook has some kind of no-modern-VW-product filter installed..

Don't be a poof with some half-hearted effort - I believe this is the effect you're looking for:

Most of it, if not all. He now seems pretty tied up with tuning other cars, but still spends time on PH.

Ah inappropriate content filter. Fair enough.

Ha ha Ha. If you have to RTFM to place the lift arms or jack how many tyre fitting places are going to F**K up like that? They crush the sill seam on my car every time cos they don't how to jack a Nissan. They are all the same and have been for over 30 years yet the dolts in the tyre trade still can't do it right.
