ZX10 motor - how good is it ?

That's the original 1988 job - not the new one.

I am considering swapping the ancient ford xflow in ye olde locost for a bike engine.

I have seen a complete ZX10 package on ebay complete with carbs, CDI, loom, downpipes etc. Everything to run it - so the vendor says.

You must have had some of these on your rollers over the years. Any opinions ?

I'm hoping you'll say that it's reliable, grunty, and not too heavy.

P.S. the reserve for the complete package is 450 quid. Reasonable or too much for a relatively old engine ?

Price depends on its condition I suppose??? They make good power but only at relatively high rpm, with the original airbox etc.. Around 130bhp at the wheel if healthy.

Strength I don't know about but they dont tend to get used on the strip.

You would do better to try and find an oil cooled GSXR 1100 motor as they have better midrange and bottom end power. More tuning bits, and VERY strong! 300bhp from a STOCK engine on nitrous or turbo is simple!

Have a search and see if you can find any other BEC's with this engine. I'd be very wary of using an engine that hasn't been proven to work in a BEC, as it's mounted 90degress out from it's standard mounting and some bike engines can suffer from oil surge problems when mounted in a car. As Burgerman says the GSXR1100 is an excellent choice, probably the sidecar racers favourite with lots of tuning parts available and usually a selection of second-hand sidecar engines available in the classifieds. Another option is the Fireblade engine, cheap and easy to source and proven to be more or less bulletproof in a BEC without needing a dry sump.
