Getting very pissed of with my car now. I wont go into the details but i'm thinking of replacing it. Looking for something super cheap, handles fairly well, is easy to work on without being dog slow. Any ideas bearing in mind i'll be doing a few road rallies in it too. I would like a 205 TD but they're too expensive. 309 TD/SRi is a possibility if i can find one. Seen a couple of 405 GRis for

slightly over your budget (and prob miles away from where u is at) but would make one hell of a road racer...

should have added to that no GTis. The aim is to save money, and a GTi would cause a hike in the insurance. So < group 9 would be idea.

I remember going to see an Mi16 and ending up being given one of these for a drive I wasn't impressed
especially when the guy wanted £10k for it :) (way back in 1993)

AX GT mate. You know them anyway as its similar to the 205 XS, Grp 9 to insure. Light, fun and should be good for road rallying.

I did think about this, but i'm fed up with the fragile-ness of the 205 - i doubt the AX would be better. Thats why i want a TD - stronger suspension, stronger driveshafts, stronger clutch/'box, more reliable engine. A 309 TD would also be good, as i reckon it'd be easy enough to squeeze a little intercooler under the bonnet when i had a bit of spare cash!
