The 3 series is boring, has no pretensions to practicality, is slightly too expensive, is as big as any other car, and just has nothing 'unique' going for it.
The 1 series ONLY has the interest that it's small and RWD, like a latter-day Chevette (though if I could have a brand new Chevette, I'd have that instead).
I just went for the 206 on Motabilty cos it'll get me through uni with no unexpected costs - and 'cos the MX5 sport was too unpracticle - not at the time, but a month later when i needed to get a wheelchair in it...
Gonna text drive the 120d next time - i don't want one, and i'm not even considering it, but i still fancy a quick thrash :)
I've driven a 1 Series (diesel) and it brought a smile to my face. But then I've little experience of other similar sized cars these days. Liked the Mini, found the Focus very competent but bland.
No absolutely not, never, no no no. If nothing else because four cylinder C-classes may as well be FWD because there isn't the power to fool the electronics into giving you just some, just any, ass-out action at all.
Because there is more choice!
I don't like the BMW 1-series... but I prefer it to a huge number of other vehicles.
Hey you ought to try the Ka, not because you'll buy one, because it's a useful benchmark for entertainment. Then knock points off it with the Golf, the Focus and the 1-series.
I say do it. Sometimes being anti-cool becomes cool. Becomes anti-cool. Becomes a reverse status symbol. Going for the 116i and *keeping the badge* makes people either think you went for the cheap option or you have the M5 at home.
My old boss has the following vehicles, and loves them all for different reasons.
2005 BMW M5. V10. Need I say more.
2004 BMW 120d. 50 mpg. 163 bhp. RWD.
2005 Iveco horse box type thing.
2004 Ka Style. FWD, fun toy, kept it rather than swap for a MINI because it was as much fun but slower (for his daughter). Probably also makes him appreciate the M5 more too. :)
About £6,000, and liable to be worth £2,000 (if that) after 3 years and have cost that in additional maintenance over a new car during the same period. Whereas I get a £15,000+ car on contract unless I do something really stupid.
Not that it matters that much to me, but £6,000 isn't enough to get a sensible, reliable used car that would be more appealing than a brand new car.
*nods* Aside from maintaining it, I think a really nice B10 would be more than I could spend.

I can have a basic 3-series, no coupe, no upmarket spec. They're getting more expensive now they're depreciating/common.

A Dunedin. I've been in there for 1 series brochures and a quick look over the Mini Cabriolet; when I got the Beetle I tried a Cooper S and was quite impressed with it, but the price was too much when I had the options I wanted. Cursed options.
A bit. Steady gathering of water in lh rear footwell. If not vaxed every couple of months, I get white mouldy stuff, but attempts to trace the leak have been half-hearted and unsuccessful.
*nods* Well, they are Kompressor models. Remember that the Scorpio is lardy and 145bhp, and I have fun with that.
I've driven hundreds of cars, and I've driven a Ka - and it doesn't appeal to me. Just isn't my thing. I considered a StreetKa, but I don't think I'm quite gay enough; I considered an Aygo too.
My benchmark for entertainment is the Fiat X1/9.
I wouldn't debadge; when I blast past some idiot who thinks they know the A7 or A68 better than me when I'm in the Beetle, I wish for a bloody great big 1.6 badge on the back.
