Good chap :)
Good chap :)
Plus, 19 is faster :)
So in the real world, there's sod-all difference, then?
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of 16v engines, prefer the low-down pulling power of an 8v.
IME the build quality of a mk2 Golf isnt much better than what the french had to affer at the time!
You need to try my Golf methinks, if low down grunt is your thang...

I'd choose the Golf every time, in this company, (given the 19s appalling electrical gremlins and 'friendly' access to the cambelt etc), and if I had a bit more money, I'd choose a Civic VTi every time, over that...
A clue - the 19 16v was very popular in its day... look around and see how many are left vs the same era Golf GTis... nuff said really.

*shudder*
No thanks. I don't do oil burners.
I don't buy all this 'real world low down torque is quicker' crap. In the real world, i can change down and get into the powerband...
Low down torque is for fuel economy lovers and people that drive like Dervy.
What a load of bollocks.
You don't seem to have the experience of a decent 8v lump with proper power output.
HTH.
Thats cos all 8v lumps are old :) Crazy red line chase is where the fun is :p
Next you'll be telling me i want to try a nice TD...
Why not have something that can do both? - I have 8v and VVT. Gobs of torque low down and manic rush to the redline from around 4k rpm. The rev counter even has green, amber and red sectors on it, so you know exactly when VVT is about to kick in :-)
If I ever to that you have permission to shoot me.
Colour sectioned rev counter is CLEARLY awesomely cool. I want one :) Mines just silver all the way, then red dashes, then red.
Duely noted.
Sir appears to still be living in the dark ages, with regards to his perceptions...
Ho hum.

And what real world is this that you find the opportunity to use the
16v's higher speed in, whilst not noticing the considerably poorer economy and compared to the 8v 1.8, much shorter lifespan ;)I have also owned both, and the 16v had to be revved like any 16v lump; the 8v GTi dealt with 40mph ditherers in a far tidier fashion. It also returned nearly 10mpg more.

*nods* Suuuuurrrreee....

My Renault 19 experiences:
75,000 miles TD - gearbox absoultely shagged. No 2nd or 4th. Automatic - gearbox well shagged and leaking. Chamade 1.4 - dashboard collapsed, seats evil, brakes useless, pissed oil everywhere. 16v - electrics shagged, dashboard cracked, doortrims warped and rust on tailgate.19s are one of the dullest, blandest Renaults ever made, and they're as badly made as the others. I used to love the look of the cabriolet until I got close to oned
Richard
Yes, but you don't drive real cars, you have those french things. IIRC all the XU engines, when injected instead of carbed, managed to somehow move their peak torque to 4,000 rpm instead of 2,500.
The Supra has low-down torque. However, rev it and it goes very very quickly indeed :D
Richard
Mines not a XU :)
What about the 405?
Richard (besides, it was a reference to the behaviour of PSA engines in general).
I don't drive that anymore.
