Sig change - again!

Tonight, I bought an Mk2 Golf GTi 8v.

G reg, '90, small bumper, Tornado red, steel wheels, 3dr, full history from a VW specialist and VW themselves, G60 reg plate, Sony black panel with remote and 10 disc changer, thatcham immobilised, 2 owners (once since 91, his sons girlfriend was the other - I bought it from his son)

Every MOT back to 1993, full engine rebuild in 2004, £3827.26 worth of bills, couple of light spots of rust on one door but otherwise immaculate.

Me mucho bunny of happiness.

Are they really as economical as Kilpatrick used to imply?

Mine will do 45mpg at a steady sixty. Which is better than I've managed in anything else.

How about on a mix of 80ish motorway cruising combined with stop start congestion?

34mpg with me driving, which is basically what I do - a bit trundling round Sheffield, a fair few motorway miles and some B road caning.

You know I used to have the Jetta version of that - fuel economy of that thing was amazing, *especially* if you're driving longer distance. I think the CRX is slightly better but if it is at all then not by much.

The Scirocco (1.8 8v carb) I've just sold would regularly do 35-40 in town and upto maybe 50 mpg on a run. 20 quid would get 200-210 miles round town, and something like 240 on a run.

My old LHD Golf GTi 8v (k-jet), on the other hand, averaged 25 mpg no matter what, but was the quickest 8v GTi I've ever driven. Far quicker than the one I've just bought, which is digipants unfortunately.

This one is crying out for a G60 conversion - and might just get one if I can find a rusty Corrado with a good engine.

That's pretty impressive.

That's a surprise because all k-jet 8vs that I ever came across did

35-40mpg. That was one of the reasons it was fairly popular back in Germany.

It's the "good engine" with a good supercharger that'll be hard to find. R32 conversion, YKIMS :).
