Indeed, but you have driven one. What else have you driven? Anything with a nice, 'square' 8v engine that does 300,000 miles before dying in many cases? Or even a 1.8 GTi?

Richard

Never actually a 1.8 GTi, or even a VAG except my mates 1.05 polo, but i've driven low down torquey stuff, i like revving, get over it :)

As you will in a few years.

I've done the revvy little engine thing, it's not good. In fact, for the kind of mileage I do, it would be incredibly tedious.

I love the Alfa 8v TSparks 'cos I can stick it in 4th on a twisty road and forget about gears.

Son, what you want is an automatic... (c;

Personally i'd take a 205 GTi every time. But the Golf would be a close second!

I do?

I think you'll find I don't.

OK, it spins round nice and freely, but I usually keep it in the green zone.

I'd have the 205, then the 19, then the Golf :) But an R5 GTT before all of them :D

It's great innit !

He specifically says : Personally, I'm not a huge fan of 16v engines, prefer the low-down pulling power of an 8v.

There's nothing with more low-down pulling power than a diesel lump - to which his reply is : No thanks. I don't do oil burners.

!

Your average 16v engine has just as much low-down pulling power as your average 8v. But it's got more top-end.

You get the best of both worlds !

...and be annihilated by anything with forced induction.

If low-down torque is what you like, then you need a Turbo car !

OK who's up for forcing SteveH to drive a TD at gunpoint, then pulling the trigger once he starts driving it?

Dan, I think, is deliberately nauseating. Remus can't help himself poor lad. You, however, wholeheartedly stand by all the bullshit you spout.

Wheres Brian James Johnson when you need him/it?

If you can't stretch to a decent GTi, try a Driver.

I had a hoot in mine, it was quite quick, very nice to drive. Mine cost £150 but was a very beat up. Lasted 6 months, I crashed it, it soldiered on. I figured it wouldn't be worth putting through the MOT so stuck it on ebay and got £10.50 for it!

You'll likely get a very tidy Driver for your £500

Ugh, carbs. They're alright, but not as fast, economical or reliable. I hated the VW carb in my Jetta Syncro, was always going wrong.

It's a balance thing. Oil burners have loads of torque for a couple of thou rpm, then just stop doing anything productive. An 8v petrol lump with VVT does all the torque thing, but will also rev. to beyond 6.5k rpm if you feel the need to.

I have a car with 2 personalities - a relaxed, torquey cruiser below 4k rpm and a rev-happy screamer above.

Show me a diesel that'll do both of the above.

It's only _very_ recently 16v engines have caught up with the old Alfa

8v TSpark in terms of outright power delivery. 150bhp from 2lt and 8v. Lovely. There's still 16v 2lt lumps out there that don't do that.

My 16v has a fair bit of low down grunt, yet will still rev to almost 8krpm thanks to some Toyota cleverness in the inlet manifold. And thats 20 years old!

50 years old here.... ok, VVT only came 20years ago....

My Audi does the rev-happy screaming thing up to just over 4500rpm.

Erm......I'll get me coat :-)
