If you had £1.5k

Well, funny you should mention that. Either a 2.0 Prelude Generation 3 4WS and some toys. If I had a little more to play with (not much) An Import generation 4 Prelude 2.2 VTEC with a Cambelt change for piece of mind Maybe an MR2 possibly if Saab 9000 Carlsson if fuel costs weren't an issue.

In news:cfe56f$v4a$ snipped-for-privacy@news7.svr.pol.co.uk, REMUS decided to enlighten our sheltered souls with a rant as follows

There's a 320i Coupé round the corner from here for £1700.. bit of haggling and I'm sure it'd slip under the barrier...

My choices for £1500?

24v Carlton, 24v Granada, Alfa 164 24v, 205 GTi 1.9, Alfa 155 2.0 widebody, XJ6 4.0, BMW 750iL, Range Rover, Alfa 75 3.0, 24v Mondeo, Golf GTi Mk2

I love old BMWs (have an E34 535i myself) but wouldn't go near a 750 with a s***ty stick, personally. YMMV.

Why wouldn't he want one of them?

Heh... well I'd not recommend one unless you've always got a spare engine on standby. Other than that, King Dick driftmobile.

but it is the later spec car rather than the first gen 750 i've seen them going for less than 3k locally

Mine has yet to use an engine in 4 years and about 48K miles (but only

44K more on clock due to self clocking odometer that forgets to record some trips). But gearboxes are another kettle of fish.

How much boost are you running?

I have to admit, my mates one has been very reliable since he rebuilt the engine, and he's running 8 injectors amongst other things.

But you have to admit they do have their big end and turbo troubles - some of which can be avoided by modifications, others which are par for the course, especially if running more boost etc.

Another mate, having destroyed his engine by running a bit too much boost, is in the process of shoehorning an RB25 in - for those of you who are unfamiliar with 'RB25', it's the 2.5 24v Turbo out of an R32 Skyline.

Me wanna a go when it's done, me been told I can :D

-- JackH

lucky :( i'll have a skyline one day, well i hope anyway either that or a Lexus IS200 with a super charger bolt on, should make it tap close to 300bhp :)

Heh, yes I've had a 'King Dick' in my hand once or twice too, and used it to tighten my nuts...

Naturally.

-- JackH

My dad once had (still got?) a huge set of sockets branded 'King Dick'. Made me smile every time I changed my Escort's head gasket...

Good, solid tools though

Stock. I was planning on running it 5 years before doing any mods. After that it will be open season - one year to go. I've started on some body mods early. Can't really call punto clear side repeaters and crystal clear indicators mods. The main driver to the start of mods will be the demise of the OEM exhaust but so far it has refused to give the excuse I need to put a Mongoose on. I have a spare car to supply the bits so I will be able to work one engine up and have a spare to keep me going.

Would that be John S? Seen his dual ECU 8 injector mod on the SXOC.

I have plans to run the stock fuel and LPG together - 4 stock injectors 4 lpg injectors. I can get the LPG back end kit for less than the cost of uprating the fuel pump and regulator. Will allow up to 400bhp without having to fork out for 550cc injectors and it pays for itself over a year. Limiting to 330-350bhp would ensure it didn't max out and allow stock internals to begin with (a year with luck and driving to work on only LPG with hi boost and dual fuel off). Will need mongoose, boost control, big turbo, Z32 MAF (or 'Y' pipe and two stock MAF), FMIC, hybrid chip custom mapped.

Got mine at 80K, now on 125K. It looks like the B/E's had been done as there is non nissan RTV round the sump. Turbo has tried to escape it's duties twice but it appears to be original as it has no rebuild plate (unlike the 67K mile parts car - has a mint turbo technics rebuild in it, shame about the B/E's). First time I did all the gaskets from head to cat. Last time I just did the manifold to turbo joint. I do oil changes every 3K miles using semi synth 10w40 and a new Nissan filter. As I live in a village with about 3 miles of 30-40 limit approach it gets a steady warm up and cool off.

I have the option on Phil LS old engine - he's John S brother, and the one doing the RB conversion. I have suggested that me and John go halves on it and the rebuild it needs, then we've got a spare lump sitting there ready if the worst happens to our existing ones.

Plus if we don't use it, well you are probably aware of how much they go for.

Yup, one of my best mates :-)

I argue with him all the time about how his shouldn't work properly... but it does :D

Goes like bloody stink as well, and as you probably know, he's now looking into twin turbos.

Sounds involved, but very interesting.

Keep me posted - what's your SXOC ID?

I've been advised to run mine on 5w40, but we shall see

-- JackH

The RB 25 is out of the R33 Skyline GTS-t. The 32s had the RB20. The 25 is a great motor. Torquey as hell and comes on boost with a big push in the back.

Fraser

My bad... they're all numbers babbled in one ear, and out the other once he gets going!

He wants an RB26 really... some people are never happy!

-- JackH

Well this is sat on my driveway ready to be snapped up

Gotta go now the 309 Mi16 project is starting!!

I think 5w tends not to stay in the bearings overnight so you start with a thinner oil film - more wear. Some people on the SXOC suggest

10w50 or 10w60 but this would need real care to warm up. Someone posted a link on one of the uk.rec.cars groups, for a Ford RS200 on E-bay, the windscreen had a sticker with something like "WARNING - do not rev engine or attempt to move off at all in the first 90 seconds of engine operation from cold, do not exceed 2500 rpm until engine is fully warm". Price you pay for a 340bhp green top Cosworth. No doubt a CA18DET will need the same gentle treatment if tweaked to that amount of power when running on oil that's up the job.

OK, I'll PM you next time I'm on there.

Well for now... it's standard bar the dump valve and hybrid turbo, and that's only a T25, so I will, when I go to pick it up, probably just stick some 10w40 Magnatec in there.

I'm planning to up the boost to 12psi once it's had the once over, and got the MOT sorted, but I need to sort a chip out or something as it's overfuelling at the mo.

-- JackH

I have owned both motors and I think the RB25 is a better motor for a daily driver. You have to wring the RB26 neck to get it into it's favorite rev range. Both are great.
