Simply remove the back box altogether, the effect will be the same as fitting a louder, deeper, cheap back box (and you'll irritate the same number of people - well me, please just don't drive past my house.

This will give you more induction noise, and make your car sound a bit rortier.

Presumably you mean like ducting from the outsite of the engine bay to the air box, this may give you a wee bit more power, made a lot of difference when the cold air duct wasnt in place in my 205.

Nothing you do to your air intake will affect the exhaust note!

But there's nothing to stop you taking off the rear silencer and running some straight pipe to the rear of the car instead. Shouldn't make your car fail an MoT either. However don't expect any actual power gain.

Whats the mpg on one of the average muscle cars?

I do like the Shelby in Gone in 60 Seconds, but its not original, its had the bodywork modified slightly.

Cheapest option is to sell the car and bu something with a V6 or V8 in.

Ford Capri MK1 3.0V6, Corvette or similar can all be cheaply insured as classic cars.

Around 12MPG. You could get a Reliant Scimitar, Ford Capri 2.8 or Rover SD1 V8 and get the same noise.

Come now Conor - an essex or cologne V6 will make a similar noise at best. A good ol' merkin V8 makes an entirely different noise. I was over there very recently and we went to a saturday night cruise where it was wall to wall small block and some big block V8s. Earthshakin' stuff.

My Camaro gets 19-20 mpg average, but it's a only a 305 small black. The big blocks (400cid+) get 12 or much less depending on setup!

I've not heard a really good sound out of a Rover V8 - as they say "there ain't no replacement for displacement".

Still, the Rover V8 has it's roots in Detriot so I'd own one anyday! (probably in a Landie)

Rubbish, it'll change both. Stick a cone filter on your car, and then notice the difference ! If the "air going in" changes, then the "air coming out" changes, for obvious reasons !

I fitted a sidepipe to a V8 P6 one once. It was straight through and sounded gorgeous.

You need a failry straight through system to get a decent sound.
