Am I right in thinking that some jobs on the 2.1 TD are a real pain?

Am I right in thinking that some jobs on the 2.1 TD are a real pain?
I dunno about jobs on them, but the 2.1 is a bit s**te isn't it? It makes the same power as the 2.0 HDi 110, but is a full 12mpg less economical on the combined cycle. And it makes much less power and torque than the 2.2HDi yet is still 5mpg less economical on the combined. So the question of why has to be asked? Looking at Autotrader suggests not much difference in price (between the 2.0 and 2.1 - the 2.2s are still a bit pricy - but they do chip rather well...)
Surely the earlier 2.1s must be cheaper than the 2.0HDis? I would look, but can't be arsed :)
I didn't look very hard :) Yea the very early ones are, but they're aren't many about to be fair, and the early ones all have mental miles or look a bit s**te in the photos. If you could settle on a HDi 90 they're even cheaper - and Van Aaken will chip them up the 110bhp for you - but for the price of that and a 90, you could probably just buy a 110..... Which will then chip to 130bhp and 295nm because it has the intercooler.
But the pick is clearly the 2.2, chipped to 156bhp and 360nm :) That'd be quite nice in a coupe i reckon...
It's french. So probably. They're crap. Don't even think about it.
Nope, the 406 is a smooth riding, comfortable, spacious and refined saloon. Unless anybody wants to donate (whip round) it's in the short list.
Check the age and price, eh? *reality check* heh. :)
Yes, they're a lot cheaper. It's a respectable donk upgrade from the 1.9 too.
Correct, they're not all that common - but it's a lovely engine, the 2.1. Same headling output as the 2.0 HDi 110, but somehow feels less peaky. It should also soot more. Soot is good. Dervy likes soot.
Don't get me wrong, I like the HDi anyway but the 2.0 always feels slightly peakier than the older units.
Maybe, but I have a budget to work to. I want a cruiser and I have always liked the 406. I nearly bought one but went for the Mondeo.
Charlie likes China Blue too... :)
With the build quality of something with really poor build quality, and interior material finish of a car from the 60s.
Says the man with an Elk Class.
Soft plastics, quality cloths, leather wheel, climate, cruise, clever auto box. And they all work, and will all work in many years time. The only real A class problems are steering columns, of which I've just had the latest revision fitted, and they can last up to three months....
You have strange ideas about quality. A friend had one on a PCP plan (which turned out to be a good thing as MBUK had totally ballsed up residual calculations) but quality was the one thing I could never accuse it of having. Looked like Fisher Price had designed the interior.
The dash and vents are a bit twee but less so than anything french. And it all works.
Can you get China Blue 406's?
It's not a modern Merc you know...
The steering column only lasts three months ?
wtf is that about ? :)
It's a comment relating to the steering column, stating that it appears to only last 3 months.
HTH :-)

I knew Merc quality had taken a nose dive, I just didn't realise quite how much !
I'll donate a funky blue moped if it stops you getting a 2.1TD.
