Re: Doh! The inevitable 620TI gearbox death

Arse. Fixing budget is 500 or it's up for sale as a spares=20

> or repair job. I need a cheap reliable runaround for now=20 >=20 > A) Anybody got any experience or tips with getting the job=20 > done within my budget to a decent standard?

Had ours done a couple of months ago, caught the warning signs=20 fortunately and got it sorted before it spat the dummy.

=A3500 should be enough to buy you a full on job with all the main=20 bearings done. My local place wanted about =A3300 just to replace the diff= =20 bearing with a steel caged jobbie, but I went for a full box recon for=20 about =A3500, with all the major plastic caged bearings replaced with=20 metal ones.

Maybe a brand new 'box from Rover might be an option?

Hehe, that's not a comment I'd expect from a sober person :)

Yeah, was that the fully fitted price Lordy? Who did the work?

Well you know what I mean, the parts people are still around apparently but I've no idea how to get hold of someone who can sell me some parts! And unfortunately, I am sober this Saturday night - thought I'd better reallocate beer money to gearbox money.

If it's got breasts or an engine, it's going to cost you...

Is the box specific to the Ti then ? I just thought there'd be loads of 'em in the scrappers...

700 squids for routine parts replacement? Sounds like another reason to stick to BMW with a timing chain.

To be fair, that's main dealer prices.

My local mechanic will do it for around 200 quid.

There are, theres plenty of out there, PG1, PG2, some with torsen diff - the only real difference is if its cable or hydro and even then its not a big deal swapping over. The 820 vits had the same box and engine setup, some of the 2 series, some hondas too, loads to choose.

Hondas? With a Rover box?

Other than the diseasel accords, I don't think so...

Yes. It was still driveable though, so obviously that's the price for me=20 taking it in myself, waiting a few days and then collecting good as new.

A small garage just off of M1 Junc 28 who have a gearbox specialist=20 working for them part time to do recons and rebuilds.

If you can remove the box yourself, or get it taken off locally then=20 there is a chap on

who does rebuilds for about =A3180=20 plus parts iirc. Supposedly pretty good and probably the best option if=20 your car is not driveable.

Failing that, just grab your local Thomson or Yellow Pages and start=20 ringing Gearbox specialists in your area. You'll probably find a few=20 have experience with this - the main bearing you need fitted is a pair=20 of M208's with metal racers. You can just opt for those to be replaced=20 at about =A3300 but the problem is it's hard to tell exactly what needs=20 replacing until you open the box up and see what has been destroyed. If=20 you're going to the trouble of having them done tho, it's usually a good=20 idea to go for the full bearing set rather than just having those done.

On the Ti? No.

The box is a Honda design built under licence

The ratios are, but the box isn't.

You must be thinking of JackH's 'scrapyard' :)

There were only 275,000 Rover 600's ever built worldwide, and only a tiny fraction of those are TI models. Chances of finding a good one that hasn't already been raided in a scrappy are slim to none.

More a development of an old Honda box, but that's about the size of it.

Ah, that'll be why it broke then, given who 'developed' it. ;)

Yup, a castoff product that was discontinued due to not being up to modern standards and subsequently redesigned and built by PowerTrain for Rover.

Poor thing never really stood a chance.

I paid £250 including parts for the job.

Car cost me £650, mind, and that was just because the variator made it sound like a dying diesel.

In news: snipped-for-privacy@news.individual.net, NeedforSwede2 wrote something quite bizarre, possibly in an effort to confuddle the world. It went like so;

Indeed, jeez, trying to big up the Alfa 'ere...

besides, I'd have introduced Fishman to my tame Alfa mechanic [1], as they live in the same village, it'd be rude not to..

[1] This is a bonus worth over £700 to any Alfa owner

Sorry mate. Didn't mean to bugger up your earner. Was joking, assumed=20 you ended up having to go through the books (stranger things have=20 happened) or something.
