It is something I've considered, but the chances are, the kitchen will be smallish, and I fancy an american style fridge freezer, I enjoy cooking a lot, and I always overmake, so it will be worse when I'm cooking for one. Plus ice and chilled filtered water in the summer will be a bonus.

IME ISP's included 'free' news provision has been pretty rubbish since I started posting to usenet in about 2000.

I'm just looking for somewhere closer to my local with parking. A garage would be nice, but space for 2 cars would be better.

Not trying to teach you to suck eggs here, but since you are shortly to be footloose and fancy free, isn't this an opportunity to reshuffle things in your favour? You know, search the country to find a properly good job, somewhere which doesn't require a soul-destroying commute on a daily basis?

I've nothing against them, but there are places which are nicer and cheaper to live than the suburbs of Manchester.

Manchester and the surrounding area's not that bad... but the weather and traffic are utter, utter s**te.

Job isn't mega paid, but it is stable. I can hang in there until the "recession ends" then make my choices. Generally I quite like it.

Not planning on moving to Manchester or any of it's suburbs. If I move into Manchester/Stockport/Greater Manchester I end up with 3 drives a week back to Warrington for archery training as I'm a paid up member now. I would need to find a new local (I like the biker pub I drink in, especially when there is the potential to get a free bbq every week, and a free pub quiz to win a gallon of beer and 1 and sometimes 2 bands a week). Council tax is 50% of what it would cost me in Manchester, houses are less than 50% of what a decent area would cost me. You tend to find that IT/Internet/Media companies congregate arround cities because that is where the clients want to be. Where I am now I have really good access to Liverpool/Manchester/Leeds(at a push).

I wouldn't mind moving south again, or up to scotland, but I can see I would end up working in one of the cities and living a good commute out as the property prices/council taxes are so much cheaper than in a city.

Plus I like the country arround me, and for being urban, Warrington does have quite a bit of green arround it to counteract the concrete jungle.

Not saying I won't consider it, but can't see job/house move coming up at the same time. Staying out for a couple of years is a safe option and for now I like safe.

Moving down South is almost as bad as moving to Manchester.

Still, no matter how bad it gets, you're unlikely to be moving to Cardiff. (Although you can buy houses just outside there for as little as £100k and blag that it's prestigious)

I have to agree with that, I loved living in High Legh (just near Lymm) for the surrounding cheshire countryside. And it's surounded by more beauty. North Wales, the Peak District, North Yorkshire and further up the M6, the lake district.

Weather's much, much better down here. It's a 45 minute train into London if I fancy it and I earn 10k a year more despite taking what I feel is a step down the "career ladder" plus from what I can see, it's no more expensive to live around here than it was in the nicer bits of Manchester/Cheshire.

There are less off the super-rich rubbing your nose in it round here too :)

Wear did you end up?

A village nestled between Bedford and Cambridge.

Cool, only been to Bedford once for a computer Auction, but it looked a little more cultured than Luton.

Which village? I actually kind of miss Luton. It was a shithole with a London sized chip on it's shoulder, but it was a really diverse town that really should get city status of it's own. I had more than one or two great nights in Luton.

Bedford's better than Luton. Very multicultural really, moreso than Luton in that it's a wider sample of the world's population. The Saturday town-centre market is a wonderfully colourful display of international people and food. The riverside setting is fantastic, particularly on a sunny day. I'd recommend people to come and live here if they didn't want to commit to full-on shandyness.
