Transit engine swap

Hi All,

I have a chance of buying a MK1 Transit, with the V4 Engine. Does anyone know if the later DI diesel engine with a 5 speed gearbox will fit in without too much modification? I seem to remember that some (diesel?) MK 1 Transits had a sort of bulbous bonnet extension, but this one has not.

Many TIA, Barleycorn.

You're in the wrong place mate. You mistook the modifications bit to mean spanner wielding etc. Try in somewhere like uk.rec.cars.classic and maybe someone old enough to remember - AWM - will help out.

I'd think you should be able to fit the 2.5DI lump in there without too much trouble [1] - the relevant parts from the Mk2 DI Transit will help in that; engine mounts etc, given that the Mk2 was just a re-fronted Mk1 anyway.

Of course, you'd have to fit a set of diesel front springs.

The Mk1 diesel front panel and bonnet will be needed.

[1] Not having done this swap, this advice is worth what you paid for it.

The DI does go into the MK1 (I've got one) but as already said, you will need a bonnet and grill panel - these will be bloody hard to get (I'm looking for a bonnet).

The only big change I had to make was the plumbing, not much to worry about. I did use a 4 speed box though, but I have put a 5 speed box in a MKIII which wasn't a problem, just the stick is on the other side.

I did gind the gearbox on the cross member was a bit tight as well.

Cheers, Mark.

Thanks for all the advice.

I will try to see if I could track down the bonnet / grill extension before I go any farther.

Thanks again, Barleycorn.

I think you might find a diesel front for a Mk 1 Transit very difficult indeed, but more to the point what is the rest of the van like corrosion wise?

Most Mk 1s rusted away years ago, but if the one you have is rust free, then it would be a far better idea to keep it std, get it up to together, sell it and put the money towards buying something like a Generation 2.5di.

If it is rusty, then I would forget about it, and advertise it for spares or repair and aim to get your money back.

If you find one, I wouldn't mind a spare bonnet... Fibreglass might be an option? In fact, if interested and prepared to cover half of the mould cost, I can get some made.

Mark.
