Tuning me Ti

I haven't touched the engine on my 620 Ti, but was just reading some of these tuning tips on a site that Nom directed me to for someat else:

These are the possibilties that they talk about:

1) K&N or Pipercross replacement air filter elements 2) K&N or Pipercross induction kits 3) Powechips 4) Cams 5) Exhausts

Acceleration is all that I'm interested in. That sites talks about the extra bhp, but what effects would those mods have on the 0-60?

I look forward to the 'Rover 600Ti gearbox problems' post in a few months time ;-)

The recommended way is to relocate the battery to the boot, then drop in a nice Blitz C1.

No, no, no and double no. Cheap chips on Rovers just cut the rev limiter and nothing else. Pretty pointless as a) the engine isn't really at it's best over 6,000rpm anyway (T25 runs out of puff) and b) the rev limiter is generally there for a reason :)

Definetely not, cam tuning is shit. An extra 5 bhp at 7,000rpm, mmmmmmmmk then.

Has to be done, but won't give you any noticeable power.

Next to none in the grand scale of things, and or a combined price of about five hundred quid (chip aside) less than you'd get if you just spend a measly 25 quid on a GBE valve.

1 - Filter 2 - Exhaust 3 - More boost (that's when it gets more interesting).

Andy Nicholls Racing will give you 400bhp for about 15 grand, if that's of any use :)

might wanna add some brakes too :)

Forget all that stuff - all you need is one of these :

easy to fit, and comes with full instructions. You can't go wrong for£30 !

13psi is about the maximum safe-limit - this will give you a small increase in bhp, and a huge increase in torque. I've had mine a few months now, and I've been VERY pleased with it :)

Agreed. Forget about Superchips etc. - they're a waste of time on Rover's MEMS system.

You've already spent a HUGE sum of money !

You'll need all that anyway. The stock pistons etc. can't take more than ~13psi.

If you want big power, you have to spend BIG money with the Rover Turbo lumps.

Agreed.

What about the lad I went to school with who's Dad had a debadged Rover 200 coupe (K reg ish?). He reckoned it had been chipped and did 200 miles an hour, and his dad drove everywhere at 5000 revs slipping the clutch so it must be true.

Interesting.. do the Ti's have one of those bleed valves attached to the ECU then? Have you had any problems with the boost limit being reached and losing acceleration? Also, do you have one of thsoe boost gauges and do they tell you if you're about to reach the boost limit?

You can't "chip" MEMS. Superchips will charge you £480 to solder two resistors to the ECU (removing the 1bar fuel cutoff) and fit a bleed valve (£5) to raise the boost. Nice profit margin :)

LOL :D

You need a boost guage as well, then you set the valve to the amount of boost you want.

At least, thats how i understand it...

Basically, yes. The ECU controls a solenoid to control the boost. The GBE valve simply replaces this with a user adjustable version, so you're free to set your own level.

Stock boost is about 10psi with the stock boost controller. Remove the boost controller (or if it breaks) and your boost will drop to about 6psi (controlled by the wastegate in the Turbo).

Boost limit is about 15psi. It's unsafe to go any higher than about 13psi (because the pistons can't take it, and you'll knacker your engine), so no, you don't hit the boost limit unless you've set it too high !

Yes and Yes. You NEED a boost guage in order to set the GBE valve to your chosen boost level. I got mine for £25 inc post, from

1bar, is 14.7psi by the way, if you wanna convert any of those figures.

You should have seen him when I asked him how often his Dad went through a clutch. :P As it was red, we all called it the Rover F40...

Yup.

Under £2k, for a GT25 turbo you might get in under £1600 or so. Proper power isn't cheap, ask Norris Designs, the engine in their Evo7 allegedly cost £40k+, 771bhp 643lb/ft @ 2.5bar... only ever got a 10.9 qtr from it and its now blown up. oh dear.

Hmm think it will do more than that, but proper pistons are always nice.

as you do with most engines... unless its a cossie which are cheap to tune.. -31 a bayjoo chip and she'll go just lovely.

was the guy (not the dad) called Arron? Did his rover apparently have a Ferrari gearbox?

Might be talking about the same person!!

Nope, a youth called John. Spent all his time lifting weights which only seemed to make his veins bigger. Which Ferrari FWD box did it have? :P

OK ta. As a matter of interest, where you stick your boost gauge? I can't imagine anywhere it'd go without looking unsightly. Did you tell your insurance company - did it cost you anymore on your premium?
