620 ti gearbox troubles

Hi.

I recently bought an M reg Rover 620 Ti and I've started to get major trouble with the gear change. I know the reverse is troublesome on the

600 series anyway, but it's become very difficult to change into 1st, 2nd and 5th gears, with the gearstick clashing against the side of the plastic housing that it comes out of when I change into 1st or 2nd.

The gearbox was changed at 48K (about 5 years ago) and the car has now done about 93k, so it's a bit worrying. The clutch was changed in February so I'd guess it's unlikely to be that.

The gearbox makes no sound when (finally) engaged and travelling along, which I'm hoping is a good sign, as a new gearbox is likely to be horribly expensive.

Anyone any ideas?

Might it just be the gear selector, and if so how expensive is that likely to be?

Thanks for any suggestions.
