If visually tatty, chances are its mechanically unloved too.
Servicing history is more important than mileage.
These are, as a rule solid, reliable cars, but can be a money pit if abused in the past. They will not take the abuse that the old Red Blocked Volvo's will stand.
1) saggy rear suspension. 2) clonky front suspension 3) smokey oil burning, head gasket failure if not run on fresh oil / fresh coolant 4) neglected cambelt change (3 & 4 are uneconomic to repair- scrap car.) 5) burst heater core 6) sagging drivers door and check strap broken- both easily fixed for pennies, but a good sign of an unloved car. 7) un-even tyre wear. 8) if manual- clutch replacement at least 400quid, if auto and not had fresh fluid every 20k it will die soon after 120k. 9) 2.5 10v uses unique exhaust manifold / downpipe where the flexi-joint is part-thereof, if replacement needed- Volvo only-big money. 10)Worn thin front discs (60quid a pair + pads from ECP) 11) Seized rear calipers / rusty discs (50quid + pads from ECP) 12) broken / disconnected heater controls. 13) burst evaporator (if aircon) 14) electric window switch pack broken (80quid from Volvo) 15) heavy front tyre wear from a combination of 2) and poor tracking.I would invest the same or less money in a clean and late Mondeo personnally, although the Volvo is a far nicer drive.
