Welding stainless steel

Can you weld stainless steel with a Mig? I seem to think you cant as a Mig isnt powerful enough. If not what do you use?

I've aquired a free complete Magnex exhuast system for the MR2, but a hanger has broke off the silencer and made a hole in it. So hopefully it's a fairly easy repair and we'll have an exhuast worth a few hundred quid for nothing!

I don't see why you couldn't weld stainless with a MIG, what matters is how powerful your welder is. I presume you need enough amps and the right kind of wire.

Nice. Good luck! Welding a patch and a hook on is going to be a piece of piss I reckon.

N.B. I can't weld. (c:

Maybe. I'll wait for someone with a bit more knowledge than us though :)

Cheers!

Me neither, but I wanna learn at some point. Might see if I can do an evening course and do it properly!

I was going to do one, but it was undersubscribed and cancelled :-(

With the right wire I think you can but you should have a gas shield on both sides of the weld and a gas feed mask (preferably not the same gas) as stainless produces hexavalent chromium gas when welded and it's carcinogenic.

If it's only an exhaust, I wouldn't bother with stainless wire etc. just weld it with mild steel wire.

Yeah, and don't look at the arc without some sort of eye protection.

It's bright.

That's pretty much my knowledge exhausted.

Yes you can weld stainless with your mig although you do need the correct wire and flux

Mild steel wire and CO2 will do for an exhaust that's not seen, you'll lose the rust resistance of the weld and a tiny bit of the material you're welding, but balls to it, the exhaust was free right ? :)

Yes I have done it and used stainless wire. Ok I'm not perfect but it was fine for what I needed. (exhaust pipe)

To Mr. Gibbs:

Ensure gloves are worn, also. The heat from the blue flame thing is very, very hot. It can and will burn your hands.

Look for a TIG welder, I think that is what you need.

Thanks for all the advice. One of my Dad's mates has the necessary gear (a good Mig, stainless wire and argon) and is a good welder so I'm gonna get him to do it. Getting the exhuast Sunday, so with any luck it'll be on the car in the next few weeks :) Jobs a goodun!

Shame. I did one at the local farmers college, and it was pretty good, although farmers tens to use stick rather than mig. A c&g in welding is an excellent thing to have on a c.v. :-)

The chap running the course was incredibly good - he gave us a demo of some tig welding, putting a new end on a small stainless pressure vessel with internal welds, which really showed the difference between comptetant ameteur and a pro. His welds were *perfect*....

I've just had my 480 welded up and the finish on that is outstanding. He's rebuilt the lower part of the wheel arch and it looks like it's just come out the factory!
