I'd've thought it'd be /very/ expensive to run on a road car, with the stresses it puts on the turbo and exhaust?

guy at the MR2 club has an anti lag system with just that. gets flames out the exhaust :)
he has a dump valve fitted but it's chucking out so much power it can't dump the air fast enough and doesn't make a PTTTTTSSSHHHHHHH noise more of a flutter which sounds well good :)
It would!! Standard manifolds/turbo/exhuasts would probably blow up the first time you used it!
In article , carl.gibbs5 @btopenworld.com spouted forth into uk.rec.cars.modifications...
Mr Faulks used uses anti-Lag/Launch control on the F900/2.
Its doesn't kill turbos/manifolds the first time he uses them, well, not quite the first anyway.
...and also means your Turbo is on the way out :)
The louder it gets, the more screwed the bearings are - until eventually, when it's whistling like a Flute Orchestra, it will POOP.
Yes, and bad things happen to the Turbo !
Some old cars had front drum brakes, but you won't find them on a modern car !
Exactly my point.
Without a dump valve, bad things happen to the Turbo. Once the makers realised this, they fitted dumpvalves.
So ?
50s cars have drum brakes on the front, but you wouldn't do that today unless you were insane !By "all Turbo-charged cars", I mean cars of today :)
Effectively, it is. Hence all manufacturers of Turbo cars, fit them as standard.
Disc brakes aren't an essential item, but a brand new Mondeo with Drums would be a bit silly !
So ?
Before the starter motor was invented, you had to use a handle.
Just because something was common in the past, doesn't mean it's ok today. Things move on !
Course it doesn't - there is no discernable "lag" on a modern Turbo car. Mine takes a fraction of a second to go from no boost to full (12psi) boost. Anyhow, the recirc valve dumps back into the inlet, so the air isn't leaving the system anyway :)
Of course it will - that's exactly why all manufacturers fit them as standard. Without a dump valve, the pressurised air has nowhere to go, apart from back through the Turbo - this does bad things to it's bearings, and if you're very unlucky can shatter the vanes (although prolly isn't gonna happen on a modern turbo).
The 53reg Sprinters I drive at work also have audible turbot whistle noises under high load at low to medium revs, with around 3500 miles on them, I seriously doubt there is anything majorly wrong with the turbos yet.
Poop? Will that give an extra 15bhp too? (c:

Can turbot whistle? And if so how could we hear them?
They whistle when they see good a handerling vehicle. Drive a MK1 MR2 past a turbot and listen very carefully.

Herrings fart, if that helps
When I first got my 205 DT, I kept thinking I could hear sirens, until I figured out it was the turbo spooling up and down :-)
No, they all do that. No cat means that the whistle is carried through the exhaust gasses relatively efficiently, and when you've got the seats and things down (or the boot lid open), you can hear it pretty clearly.
Eeeew.
'fraid not matey jim. I'm the expert on 205 DTs round here, not you :P It actually means my back box is on the way out. But i cant be arsed to change it, so it will stay like that until i can be :) Or i could just take it off, suprisingly it sounds very mean for a tractor engine :)
NO THEY DONT. You've been given at least 2 examples where they dont.
Whats that gotta do with anything?
It was you that said all turbo cars have dump valves!
And? Again, whats that gotta do with anything?
WHAT? Are you drunk? I was obviously talking about cars with no dump valve at all. And anyway, a dump valve does cause some lag (i'm not saying its noticeable) as its depressurizing the system, which then has to be re-pressurized. What you really need is some anti-lag (see my other post). :)
Again see above. If you meant all modern turbo cars, then why didnt you say it? Then again, what does modern mean? ;)
Yes, I can hear mine clearly on the TI too.
But surely your vans don't "whistle like a banshee" ?
I took that to mean "WWWWWWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE".
:)
?
Name one manufacturer that doesn't fit dump valves to their Turbo cars today.
No, I've been given at least 2 examples WHERE THEY DIDN'T.
Why are you referring to old 80s cars ?
Cars from 1910 didn't have starter motors. The statement "all mass-produced cars have starter motors" is still true !
You're saying that just because dump valves weren't used eons ago, when Turbo cars first became mainstream, that they aren't needed. Clearly that's a stupid statement !
There are *PLENTY* of things used today that weren't used eons ago - that doesn't mean you can do without them !
Er, they do ! Nobody makes a Turbo car today, without a dump valve. Infact, I'll hazard a guess that it's at least TEN YEARS since they did !
Everything. Which word don't you understand ?
Quite obviously a discussion about cars, is referring to today's cars ! If you're talking about the s***ty early Turbo systems from the 1980s, then why on earth didn't you say so ?
If someone talks about cooking, do you assume they don't have a microwave ?
mass-produced
LOL but you didnt say "all currently manufactured modern designed mass-produced turbocharged cars have dump valves" originally, but you have basically said it over the course of a few posts
Read what you announced to the world above Nom. Especially the bit about not being able to run a turbo'd engine without a dump valve and all turbocharged cars having them.
It's OK, we know what you mean now, and someone somewhere is getting a little pedantic but your original statement wasn't entirely correct before you started messing with the semantics was it? (c:
