I'd guess that at least 95% of modern turbo car engines don't have a dump valve, what with being diesels :)

My original statement was :
It's still true ! Yes, Ford and Renault (and others) didn't bother in the
80s. But this means that "bad things" happened to their Turbos ! They didn't magically avoid the badness :)

Just because they avoided using dumpvalves, does not mean they weren't required !
Because they didn't fit dumpvalves, then their systems experienced "bad things". You need a dumpvalve to stop "bad things". Hence, a dumpvalve is required.

Look up required in the dictionary. Advisable is a much better word. An engine will still work without a dump valve because its NOT required, its merely advisable to help with lag and prolong turbo life. You could do the same thing by not ragging a car and servicing it every 1000 miles. Doesnt mean its required though!

Er, it'll work without oil for a few minutes - but clearly the oil is still required.

You could run a car without an airfilter if you wanted to. But the engine wouldn't last long at all. Hence, and airfilter is required.
