I may have sorted the ABS problem. An hour with a multimeter and some screwdrivers traced it back to a dodgy relay under the dashboard. 9 squid to Mr Ford will hopefully have it running reliably again (its working again now, but I'm half expecting it to stop sometime soon!). Well happy with that. I was envisaging changing the brake pump, valve block etc, but hopefully that wont be needed now.
Just need to find a second hand lock set now. Mr Ford wont be getting my 65 quid for that! Also tappets need adjusting, possibly a new rear bumper and I'll have an XR4x4 thats in good shape. A bit more tidying here and there and I may even be able to make some money from it in a few months if I decide to sell it! :)
