Noisy tappets on a petrol 1.6 xs its a 306, year is 1998, with 60k on the clock

If it only started after the head was removed and replaced, one explanation might (actually, not might - it's the obvious one) be that the valve timing is out by a tooth and the valves are just touching the pistons. Those with a better knowledge of this particular engine than I will tell you if this is possible or not.

Not really knowing TU's I'd say it's possible, and even likely if they tried to set valve clearance with no joy. Quite easy to check, put the engine in position (one pin into the flywheel, one 8mm bolt trought the camshaft pulley - brings the engine to the belt change position). If you can't achieve this, then there's something wrong with timing.

Thanks for the help guys, have got it booked in with Peugeot to see what they say, is it ok to drive it around, as i dont want to be wearing anything out in the porcess, such as the tappets, Cam, is this wear possible or can i keep driving it as normal??

Hi,

TBH it's likely to come from timing to me, as you said it just came after a hard change. And I wouldn't play with fire if I were you. Don't try to take it for fast drives & / or wide range trips once sorted, IMO.
