'05 'stang depreciation

Speaking for myself, have never paid much attention to the depreciation cycle of cars/trucks in general as it's all about enjoying the vehicle of your choice, not how much it's worth down the road.

My wife wants to buy the new '05 'stang GT, and I advised her to wait for the '06 models as supply is going to catch-up with demand plus any bugs in the '05 model might be rectified by then.

One feature she needs, what with being only 5' tall, would be a height adjustable bucket seat which is not available.

Anyway, she thinks she has to get the '05 model as it's the first year of production, and would be worth more in the years ahead than the '06 or '07 variants.

Would that actually be the case or wishful thinking?

I am going to agree with you on the practical side. Leave the first year alone. I had tons of little issues with my Contour when I bought it. First year of the model and it went back in numerous times. I loved the car, and don't regret buying it, but I should have waited 6 more months.

While it is tempting to have the first year run, when models starting packing the dealerships, you might find some a bit heaper also.

We've got all too many Beanie Babies stashed away in the house ... probably 400+ and all of them belong to my daughters. :-/

One daughter wants to sell all of hers while the other wants to keep hers. Too many on Ebay.

Year One will start regaining value about 20 years from now. Every MY from 2005 on will depreciate at pretty much the same rate and the "year ones" will bottom out just as low as any other year. The only thing that could change this is if the Mustang line somehow ends this year :). Then it would only be a decade or so ;). The upside is that there will only be 130,000 to 200,000 of the 2005 Mustangs made, probably. That's significantly less than the half a million that were made in '64/'65. So their future appreciation should be better. But it will still take 20 years to reach that point and another few years to appreciate up to and past it's original value.

Unless you plan to keep the car that long and maintain it in decent condition, there's no collectibility advantage in buying a first year S197 Mustang, imho. . Dan

Hmm Supply demand, options, colors, production numbers, competition, condition, mileage, all these can effect the price of the car. IMO if everyone decided to wait on '06 then '05 would be worth more with less available. Next what options or colors would be dropped next year like that nice Lime Green. :) Or perhaps they will drop the multi color dash option. Right now I feel every Mustang owner is at an advantage cause it is the first and last pony car around. With the coming years Mustang will only be competing with itself with Cobra's, Shelby's, Saleen's, Mach I's, etc... Bottomline get what you like and treat it really well if you want it to be worth anything in the future.

Who cares what it's worth in years to come. Buy the car becuase it's worth to you whatever it cost. it's silly to buy a car and plan on selling it 5-10 years down the road. If you have the money to buy a new car, get a car you really want and that you are happy with. Then there will be no reason to sell it, and resale value is of no concern, as by the time you go to sell it, it'll be just about used up and have little value anyway.

Just my two cents. For whatever it's worth I plan to keep my '68 forever. My great grandma bought it new. It'll only leave my posession when it gets passed on my son or daughter many many years down the road (gotta get married and have kids first I suppose, heh heh).

I'm going to disagree with you both. Give the lady what she wants.

Remember, if momma ain't happy, ain't NOBODY happy. So what if it depreciates and you lose a few bucks? Give her the damn car. Maybe she WANTS first year braggin rights.

The thing to remember is that she will get what will make her happy now, and you won't have an unhappy lady on the pillow next to you every night for a year or more.

After all... she takes care of YOU... right? Surely there must be a way to retero fit a Lincoln adjustible seat base under the Mustang seat so it will adjust.

Wait till next year. I still remember the PT Cruisers (glorified neon) going to auction and selling for 2k over sticker. One year later they had rebates at the end of the year. The first year is normally the year of the "bugs" Let the real world driving find all the problems an let Ford catch up in 06.
