2000 Mustang brakepad change

Yes, more stupid questions from lazy dude (who did nothing himself since high scool) trying to save on dealer maintenance costs (lost my job recently). (I'm planning to change pads with my own tools.)

  1. Raybestos pads OK?
  2. Any links to sites showing the steps?
  3. Best way to push back the piston (U clamps?).
  4. Do you still have to lube any parts to prevent squeaks?
  5. I do know about opening the master cylinder cover and putting the towel around it. Anything else I need to do???
  6. If the handbrake is on, will it interfere?

Thanks in advance, Lester

I just recently did a self-taught pad change on my 96....with some help from here and other sites.

I don't know about them, but I've always liked Hawk pads.

I think there is a tech article at mustangworld.com and my haynes manual came in handy also.

9" u-clamp to push in the rear brakes. The front brakes must have the piston rotated in. Please verify this info, since I'm not sure if the brakes calipers changed from 96 to 2000.

yes. clean and lube the caliper pins. apply anti-noise lube on the back of the front pads. Also apply anti-seize to the caliper bolt threads.

I siphoned out half of the brake fluid from the reservoir and replace when finished.

parking brake should be off when replacing the rear pads

I have a 98 GT. The FRONT pistons can be pushed in, and the REAR pistons must be rotated in. There is a cheap tool readily available at any O'Reilly or Autozone parts store that will make your job a lot easier.. they just called it a "brake tool" for me.

Grab a small bottle of "Disc Brake Quiet" (orange goop) and apply to the back of all pads.

I don't really do this... but people say you should. I haven't had any problems.

Or good luck getting 'em off!! LOL..

Good luck.

Doh!! I could not for the life of me remember which calipers need the brake tool for rotating. I'm glad I put a disclaimer after that.

I used that square tool from autozone. it's a certified piece of junk, but it works with some struggling.

I'll be purchasing this kit for my next brake job:

Yeah, it's a POS.. but I've used it many times now.. with no trouble now. It takes some fiddling at first.
