California Special

Hello Group,

I just would like to know how many total CA Specials were produced and the type of engines were produced. I would like information about the CA special. Any, information would be helpful.

Thanks, Marie Schwaegerl

Any engines that were available in 1968 could be in a California Special, including a 6-cylinder. My friend has a Seafoam Green GTCS with a

6-cylinder, 3-speed--1 of 80 built. It's won 10 consecutive Gold awards in trailered concours competition.

Now whos ays that rednecks live in the South only?

You have to understand that this was the San Fernando Valley in the early 70's. Stuff like this was a spinoff from the huge custom surfer van aftermarket.

And the term redneck had no meaning in my part of the world. We thought, since we were mostly longhairs at the time, that a redneck was

*anyone* with short hair and a sunburn.

Well, no shortage of Necks where I live now.

Thanks. More info on future ideas over in the Big Block group.

And speaking of being sheltered, likewise we had no clue that people actually resided in a home that could be towed. We thought those who lived in apartments were about as low as it got. I mean, I heard on the news about yet another Texas tornado levelling a trailer park, but I though it was where people stored their car or boat or utility trailers when not in use. It wasn't until my second year in college that another student from elsewhere originally clued me in.

Thanks!

Not only that, look at the date you posted this. It's unanimous. Gotta do it. You've had 29 years to think about how to put this puppy back together and now it's time to live the dream. Don't know all the other cars you have, but obviously...this one's *Special*

Have fun with it....

Holy chit! I didn't even notice that. I must be getting senile.

You got it.

Does sitting in the seat making 4-gear race noises count?

Absolutely Jet. Makes for good therapy. Crank up a few garage tunes for added effects like the Stray Cats or whatever you're into. A few minutes of this a day should help you stay focused, rather than go askew on the C/S project, don't ya think???

Speaking of which, maybe the first order of business is to give *The Project* an official name. I'll leave that to you...Carry on.

I'm throwing my hat in the ring on naming the project. I know, I know, it's not my project, but what about "CJ/CS" instead of "GT/CS", the common nomenclature for the Cal Special. "CJ/CS" not only for who's building it, but for what will probably be under the hood too. :)

Stray Cats is good, but it really needs to be period music. I remember playing a Styx 8-track while I was making the door panels. Each one of them has a girl's name written on the back from that moment in time. Will be interesting to see what's there.

Well, time to light up Neil Young with Crazy Horse, because Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere.......

Another good one. Cue up side two/track one (Losing End) on the turntable for me when you get a chance...

A little too country/depressing for my tastes, but I did go ahead and listen to it through. I like the Big Three on that album.

I would have to say the music that *most* defines my Attitude from that era, and that will probably be the theme for the CS' refurb, is the work from a little local L.A. band called The Doors. They appeared when I was 11 and gleefully besotted with British Invasion pop. Within a few months the mopheads and hermits and dc5 hit the hamper and I started Steppen to heavy Iron and Led and a lefty who wanted to know if I was Experienced. Mr. M is my boy, though.

Hmm. Maybe "CS" can be the Crystal Ship.

It has a bit of twang, but it's still Neil and that works for me...

And JM, sometimes known as the Lizard King happened to graduate H/S just a few miles away from here (in Va.) before migrating to LA. Definately had many of us marching to the beat of a different drum. Too bad he ended up self destructing.

Anyway, better let you focus on Retrojet. Lets us know what your final plans are and take a few pics as things progress...
