It depends on where that "society" happens to be. 50 in a 25mph residential zone will definately raise some eyebrows. 80 in a 55mph zone (same 25 over) in some areas (metro areas specifically) is very socially accepted. Ever drive around Chicago trying to do the speed limit? You're a hazard. I was there once, doing 25mph over in the *right* lane, getting passed by everyone, and blazed past a cop who was sitting behind a bridge. I'm not sure what he was looking for, but not my speed nor anyone else's seemed to bother him.

As V'ger already posted in most states LASER jammers ARE illegal because it's not about radio emissions, it's about using a device to evade law enforcement/break the law.

The way most laws are written, it's not illegal to own one. It is illegal to use it. As an example: In TX it is illegal to POSESS a switchblade knife it is, however, legal to OWN one. Figure out the intelligence (?) of a law like that.!.!

I don't write 'em, I just enforce 'em.

One can complain all they want... but the old addage comes into play.... "don't do the crime if you can't do the time (or pay the fine)". And the other one is... "ignorance is no excuse under the law". If you're gonna break it ya better be able to take it.

And where exactly did you get this info from ? They're not illegal in most states. RADAR jammers are, laser-jammers are not.

There are a bunch of traffic laws that drivers don't obey and cops do nothing about. Laws like not following too close, using your blinkers and using them BEFORE doing a lane change, and slower traffic keeping right, but when was the last time you heard of someone getting a citation for one of these offenses. (Hell, even running red lights is socially acceptable in some cities -- ever been to Albuquerque New Mexico?), I don't know about you, but I've never ever heard of anyone getting busted for these offenses. For some reason, seems only speed has been demonized. I contend "speeding" by itself is not a bad thing. Think of it this way, 15 years ago traveling 70 mph was boarding on the insane. But now that we gotten some sense to raise the speed limits, going 70 is an accepted norm. Weird, huh? I say why stop at 70...if the weather is good, your car is well maintained (why don't they have vehicle inspections?), and the laws I listed above were enforced, in good stretches of highway, I think going

85-100 mph could be traveled safely.

The point is in "most" jurisdictions.

All too often people come up with ways to take your money. Whether with ideas about lining your grill with foil, or using a radar/laser detector. Most such ideas don't work, and even those that do, generally don't work in time to avoid being caught in the act.

Save you money for new headers or whatever, and either obey the law or be willing to accept the consequences of not obeying it. And, if you have a good attitude, and your friendly peace officer lets you slide, just count your lucky stars and get on with life, and take a lesson from the experience.

Most of us do not enjoy giving people a hard time. Might even say, most don't get a kick out of writing tickets... lord I hate hand cramps from all that writing.... but it is our job to enforce the laws which make the roads safer for all the users...including the violators. ....And for our kids in residential areas (I've nailed people for as much as 75 in a school zone with kids present.)

What is the population of the United States? How many are patrom cops? When yiou have put in your day and gone home, think of the cop who has to do four to six hours of paperwork for just one of the accidents he covered that shift. Then add in any arrests, response to alarms, etc. There isn't enough time in the day to enforce every law on the books. And then you add in one of our little specialties... park and walk one hour of your shift in the neighborhood and get to know the people there.

I have no idea what it's like to work on the assembly line at Ford, and I would be willing to bet thare are darn few assembly line workers who have any idea what we do. That's not a put down. It's a fact. That's why most departments have ride along programs. So the public can see for themselves the kind of abuse patrolmen take for even the most respectable drivers.

I agree on the part where people do 75 in a school zone. What I don't agree on and never ever will is nailing people on an almost empty and safe freeway doing 20 over. To me it is reveneue generation. nothing more. I have no respect for that, good cop or bad. Now if there was nothing else to do for them I'd say, ahwell. But.. Meanwhile we have record amounts of cars being stolen and/or broken into. Their priority is money, not safety and crime prevention.

This is what I was taught (1980 graduate of the Delaware County PA Municipal Police Academy). We were taught to use the Vehicle code as a tool to get to the violations covered in the Crimes code.

feet away when it gets to the targeted vehicle and a detector will be able to alert you.<

Nope not sci-fi. The beam can be held pencil size for 100's of yards. There can be scatter from atmospheric conditions or reflections off other cars, etc.

Not here in Pa. Here you are responsible for your vehical. Here you either give up the driver or you get hung for the infraction. That is of course if the car isn't reported stolen.

Where in PA are these things at and/or legal?

The only ones that I know of are on Roosevelt Blvd in Phila, but they are proliferating. Theres a good probability they are at toll booths also.

My mom lives in Collegeville. Glad I'm 300 miles away from those things though.. about 20 miles north of Pittsburgh. I'm still kinda frightened about EZ-Pass on the PA Turnpike though. I realize that the system's been in other states for years, but it just seems like an all-too-convenient way to track where you are and how fast you went.

I love technology, but some of the big brother stuff kinda freaks me out. I realize that I technically shouldn't break the speed lmiit, but there are far worse laws that can't be caught by simple machines such as these. Plus, I subscribe to the "85th percentile" speed limit setting, which is ignored for the cash cow that is a state-mandated speed. What I like is that the back roads in my area are listed as 45, and you can only do 45 on them if you really know them, as there are lots of turns.. but let there be a sharper-than-average turn in a highway and the speeds are dropped to 40. Go figure.

Back in the mid-60s in upstate NY (Syracuse area) if you reached the departure toll booth too soon, you could be ticketed. If you got there too late, the possibility existed that you would be asked to step inside as well as have your vehicle checked because so many people were deer hunting along the turnpikes.

uh, a picture of someone else driving your car isn't enough proof ??? They hand you the evidence, what can be easier than that !
