Debut Of Next Mustang Cobra Delayed, Again?

Dec 08, 2004 7 Replies

Again, per Hemmings:

- Speculation had a 400 hp, IRS-equipped Cobra debuting in '06 .

- Fact had it arriving in calander year '06 as an '07 model.

- But now the '07 model date is "in danger".

- Now it may debut in '08.

While I'd rather wait to make sure Ford gets it right (we don't want or need another '99 Cobra) this (and the Lightning) kinda makes me wonder what's going on inside Ford?

What was up with some 99 Cobra models? All I heard was something about the heads.

It seems a bit stupid to release a Cobra with only 400hp. The last one had 390hp. The hp on the GT rose by 40 from 2004-2005. The Mach-1 supposedly produced something like 330-340hp. It would make more sense if they do release one to have it have at least 450hp.

Patrick, I've been wondering/posting that for a while, and I've seen nothing but heresay and rumors. Seems there are lots of people who keep yammering about the next Cobra/Lightning, but I won't believe anything until I see product. At this point, Ford's getting to be the boy who cried wolf.

It had nothing to do with the heads on the '99 and the problem was pretty much overblown. The '99's wound up putting down an average of around 265 to 270 rwhp but the press and some others got a hold of several that were down around 255 to 260 rwhp and they jumped on Ford for overrating the car. Ford responded with an acid dipped/extrude honed upper intake and a little more open cat-back which got the low-ballers up to average. In reality, the low numbers that I saw for the car was around 250 rwhp but there were dozens that put down 280 to

285 rwhp in completely stock trim *before* the Ford upgrade so the average wound up where it was supposed to be anyway.

In a day when the F-body was basically getting the Corvette LS1 untouched and was way underrated, it was a decent move. However, having owned one and seen a ton of work and dynos on '99 DOHC there was really nothing at all with them at all. It was just marketing. Dan

I doubt it has 'only' 400 hp. That's what the 03/04 cobra puts out stock (even more since they are underrated). Pure speculation at this point.

Until there's actual product out there, _everything's_ pure speculation.
