So what if I have him reset the code with the scan tool, go home, and disconnect the battery? Or do I have to disconnect it right after he resets it?

No...disconnecting the battery for a period of time is enough.

No, it's a serious thing, if the cap fails to seal properly it can cause some sort of pressure issue and the CEL will come on

yep....my current CEL and Low Oil fix is black electrical tape. It looks ugly but it helps the annoying glow at night.
