Muffless Exhaust?

I remember someone here saying that with the six stock cats, there's hardly a difference between muffled and not. This could have been with regard to the 3.8 only, though. It'd probably increase the growl factor a hair.

The mid pipe fell off my Mustang, leaving nothing behind the cat, and I couldn't get to the muffler shop fast enough for all the drone it was making. Sounded OK outside of the car, though.

One of the times the muffler fell off of my family's minivan, I didn't even notice for a couple days. :)

I have heard on that way and I personly didn't like how it sounded. You could just unhook the mufflers and tail pipes and give a try pretty easy.

Hey Cobrajet,

I removed the stock mufflers from my 85 GT Mustang and the sound is nice and deep and not annoying. To be honest, you can only hear a small difference from inside the car but outside it has that V8 growl. I also noticed that it pulls harder and feels less restricted. Give it a try.

When I had exhaust work done to Charlene, they pulled the mufflers and fired it up. No change in the exhaust tone. It had only the 6 OEM cats installed. I would imagine that 4 high-flow cats would take of things just fine.

Friend of mine had a '97 Mustang GT, stock as a rock.. then he replaced the mufflers with just a straight-pipe. 6 catalytic converters on these cars really keep the tone down to a bearable level, but there is an increase in sound. Was louder than my '88 5.0 w/ Mac shorties, Mac 2-cat H-pipe, and

Ah hell CJ. I have a friend with a complete Kenny Brown package on his P71. He also has headers, no cats, mil eliminators, and an O/R h-pipe with Flowmaster 3 chamber. 3 inch stainless tips in the back. Probably one of the most impressive sounding passenger cars I have ever heard in my life.

He is now looking into either swapping in a 1999 Cobra motor or maybe just putting in new cams.

I would cut out the cats and run mil eliminators before I would run no mufflers. The overall sound quality is better. That is my opinion though...and those all vary.

What headers? I haven't found any for this car.

He got headers for the Mustang to fit in his Vic. JBA shorty headers. You will have the biggest problem on the driver's side.

After doing some research, plenty of people have put on headers. Motorsport, SVO, JBA, Borla. As I understand it, Borla has a complete system for this car.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention something else. Seems a lot of CV guys have chosen the Dynomax Super Turbo's over anything else. They get really good sound and no Flowmaster drone. They have been cutting out one set of cats and then putting in a custom x pipe with the Super Turbo's. Some guys go for the 2.5 inch setup while others say that the 2.5 is useless unless you are supercharging. They recommend the 2.25 inch setup.
