I always assumed this since the emblem was a horse. If it had been named after a P-51, the enblem would have been an aereo-plane.

The Specials were essentially *kudos* from the factory to high-volume sales districts, OR trim packages made up by sales districts to bolster interest in certain models. Lots of Mustangs in my area back then with surf racks.
