I was driving El Imán from Jackson to Birmingham (I-20/59) this afternoon. Sometime before I got to Meridian, I was in the right lane, quickly coming up on a tractor-trailer rig. I check my mirrors and saw two cars rapidly approaching in the left lane. I did a bit of quick mental calculus, flipped the turn signal, and smoothly accelerated into the left lane, around the truck and then back into the right lane.
The first car over took me shortly and continued on eastward. The second car, a red, 2000 (I think) GT with Texas plates (and really ugly gingerbreading on the back) starts to pass me, and then decelerates. I think there's possibly a problem, so I tap the brake to disengage the cruise control and coast a bit to let this car pass me. The red GT slows down, too, but stays in the left lane about even with me.
Man, this is weird, I think, so I hit the resume button to get back up to my cruising speed of 75 MPH. As I start to pull ahead of the red GT, it takes off with a quick burst of acceleration and disappears over the next little hill.
In the 25 months that I have my 2001 GT, this is the first time anything like this has happened to me. Perhaps he saw me speed up to get around the truck and figured I was interested in racing. If this guy was challenging me . . . well, you won, buddy. 'Tain't interested.
It was, however, very Christmassy, what with our green and red Mustangs heading down the highway and all.
