RK and CB Build a Rod for CJ

So, after the smoke cleared I says to myself, "Self, all this bench racing from Refinish King and Charles Bendig can't really reflect the quality of the work these gentlemen do. After all, if someone on the Net claims to be the best, how could I possibly doubt it?"

So I contacted the duo via email and begged them to build my '65 Comet into the A/Gas replica I dream about nightly. They finally agreed to take on the project, so I shipped them the Comet, $50,000 in cash, and two gift subscriptions to Lumberjack Monthly. Here's my beloved Comet before being loaded up:

I have to hand it them, the turnaround was lightning fast, to be sure. I asked for a radical straight axle car with a killer motor, unique paint job, and a no-nonsense interior. This came off the trailer just a few minutes ago, and I gotta tell you, you really do get what you pay for. Kudos, RK and CB! I'm sure everyone at the strip this 4th of July will remember my ride for a long time to come. I'm all giddy.

Sweet ride!

I have an old shopping cart, maybe if I send that in I'd get a Thunderbolt back! What say? StuK

I bet it launches like a bat out of heck, but the landing is going to be rough rough rough!

Thanks for making me smile!

I'd say you should wonder where the other bench of this pair might be!

Now, are you talking about the gasser landing back on its wheels, or my butt falling off the back and landing on the July-in-Phoenix ASSphalt?

I'm surprised you didn't xpost it to AACF. I'm sure RK & CB would've loved to see the pix.

About the two new cars.

The first is a '69 Sportsroof that started life a 351W 2bbl FMX car with highway 9" peg leg in the rear. 4 wheel non-power drums and fold down rear seat and sport side mirrors. It was originally Lime Gold Metallic. It's since had a 4bbl Carter on top of a Performer intake stuck on the top end. The peg leg is gone and is now a 3.73:1 posi and the color is dark jade green. The car had PS and AC The PO yanked it all in favor of more HP. What a moron; he didn't keep ANY of it so I could put it back on. The clearcoat is burned off the roof and it needs some bondo checking ground out of the driver's side quarter. Both rear lower quarters need patches, but the rust damage can't be seen and is VERY small. Driver's front floor board was replaced sometime in the past with thick flat sheetmetal instead of the correct repop floorboard. I think I'll leave it since it's solid and without rust. The intake cam lobe on cyl 8 is "half flat" and the original rockers were replaced with cheapo roller tips. We pulled the motor yesterday to build a 393 with CHP's 3.85" cast crank. The Carter AFB is out also in favor of a Holley. (As an aside, the brand new Edelbrock carb in the 'Chero is a total piece of shit and is being returned in favor of a Holley DP.)

Plans for this car are to turn it into an *homage* to the '69 Boss 302 cars driven by Dan Gurney and Horst Kwech. Corporate Blue with white reflective sidestripes. I won't be a poser though as I will use the Grabber stripes from '70 so nobody can say I'm building a clone. I haven't decided whether I want to use the new Azure Blue on the current crop of Mach 1's or to use Audi's Nogaro Blue which they shoot on some of their A and S4's. The interior which is currently dark green will be changed to a white standard interior. No highback seats but the standard seat with the adjustable headrests. Carpet will be black with black dash. I'm going to put the PS and AC back in it somehow. I'll also upgrade to power disc/drum brakes. both front and rear spoilers and sport slats will be added also.

The second is a '97 Mercury Cougar XR7 30th Anniversary Special Edition. It's one of the rare White Opalescent cars. It has the SOHC 4.6 and OD auto trans. What I really like about this car is the traction control *and the fact that you can shut it off*. I need to do some more research, but I think this is the same version of the 4.6L that was dropped into the GT's of the same time frame. The sucky thing is this car feels and is heavier than the 'stang. You can tell when you try to launch it from the stoplight. It's a smooth running brute though when the RPM's rise :). The other nice thing with the 30th's is that they came standard with the upgraded sport suspension. Most of them were Toreador Red and there was a second limited run of 30th's that were in Light Prairie Tan, White Opalescent, and Performance White. Total production of all 4 colors was ~5000. It's the last year of the RWD V8 Cougars. Nice ride. I'm giving it to my mother for her

60th birthday which is in 2 weeks. She likes Merc's and the Topaz she's been driving the last 10 years is about to fall apart. Aren't I a good son? Now if she'll let me bolt on a SC, or at LEAST a new catback.

Done.

Sounds twitchin', man! Azure Blue is pretty nice. Strikes me as in between '70 Grabber Blue and '72 Petty Blue. Audis aren't allowed around here, so I can't comment on their blue.

Yes, you are a good little boy, Scotty. I do like those Cougars. Meanwhile, my mother is driving me apeshit about a new car for her. First she wanted a Mustang. Then she bought an Auto Trader and promptly confused herself to smithereens. She wanted me to cart her around to all the car lots to look at everything. I told her no way, as she could easily burn up weeks of my time.

Lesson? Make sure your mother doesn't live to 80.

I'm going to put the PS and

You can find all the PS gear rebuilt and there are even brand new cylinders and valve bodies now. I wonder if your P.O. even removed the PS drag link. If not then you just need to screw a valve body onto the drag link you already have.

For AC go to Custom Auto Air in Tampa. They're the Mustang specialists, and why any Mustang owner would go with the "one size fits all" stuff from Vintage Air is a mystery. Go with CAA's Daily Driver setup and forget about the OE stuff.

Brake upgrade options are many. Granada swaps are the cheapest option. Stainless Steel Brakes are good stuff, that's what I put on my kids' '65 fb. Baer is the best if price is no object. But 12"+ rotors also require 16"+ rims, so there goes another $1000.

Speaking of rims, you can still get the 10-spoke Minilites that they ran on the '69 Trans Am race cars back in the day, and of course the same style is available from Mustangs Plus and others as manufactured by Vintage Wheel Works.

God I love spending other people's money.

As an S4 owner stated re: this color, "Nogaro Blue, which I think translates to mean color bright enough for alien spacecraft to detect." Check the color here.

compare it to Azure Blue here.

colors are EXTREMELY close. The Audi is, IMHO, a bit brighter =although I think there is some pearl in the clearcoat which could =explain that. I wouldn't go with any pearl so Azure Blue is probably =what I'll go with. I'll want to see the two colors side by side before =choosing. I've also decided that I'm going to paint the hood like =this...

I even have the correct 8 spoke Minilite wheels that I'm going to have painted to match the stripes. I'm going with an extreme white color, probably Sikkens base white with zero other pigmentation added. It will visibly be an extremely *loud* vehicle.

The one thing I've thought of doing which is away from the Trans Am look is putting Shelby taillights on it with the fiberglass taillight panel. I already have the buckets bezels and lenses. I just need the panel. I'm sure that would make people do a double take and say "WTF"?! but in a good way :)

I know of what you speak.

My mom makes it sound like she'll be going any day now. She likes pullin' a "Fred Sanford" whenever me or my brother give her a rough time.

I'm currently looking into it.

I haven't climbed in underneath yet, but the motor has since been pulled since my last viewing so I'm gonna check when I go to the shop tomorrow AM.

That's what I was planning. The vents, ducts and switches are all still in place, but everything on the outside of the firewall was removed.

I've been thinking of one of the Master Power Brakes kits, I have a line on one that a guy bought and then never used. Heard anything about MP brake kits?

I have a set that is currently on the 'Chero which will swap on and will put the Centerlines on the 'Chero. BTW, they're 8 spokes. ;)

Me too, you volunteering? :)

You should search out Petty Blue and look at the '68 Terlingua hood treatment.

Minilites are trick. Loud is good. Try '65 Shelby R-code exhausts.

Tell her you fathered Siamese twins with a pygmy princess whilst high on Ecstacy and Janitor-in-a-Drum. That'll finish her off.
