Stiff but FAT, sucker weighs 4,000 pounds, and you need a big engine to drag all that fat around.

Why are cars getting heavier ?
Options and safety equipment/design, IMO.
You going by curb weight or gross vehicular weight? There's a difference. Curb weight is the weight of the car sitting "empty". Gross vehicular weight GVW, which is on your door, is the weight of the car with the recommended amount of weight the car can carry, this includes cargo and 4 passengers.
