toploader 4spd question?

What oil should I run in my toploader 4spd? 20w 50 or 90w gear oil?

My Ford owner's manual recommends Ford part number C3RZ-19C547-B. Ford specification ESW-M2C83-B. If that helps.

Probably 90w. What's your climate like?

Do NOT use a synthetic. Use good old fashioned dinolube.

ALways use a good topshelf synthetic!

Not in a top loader, it needs some friction to work!

Reminded me of a story a long, long time ago when Rolls Royce engineers were interested in building an automatic transmission using a GM version for their copy. Thing was when they made theirs they improved all the machining to get rid of what they perceived as being imperfections only to later discover that those imperfections are what made the tranny work.

Urban legend. probably?

Sorry, I don't buy that.

Reminds me of an experience when I thought my Toploader was grinding gears when downshifting from 3rd to 2nd. I loaned the car to a friend and asked him if he heard the "grinding" sound on downshift and he said, "no, it's a muscle car". And that is not legend.

When I first got my Mach 1 I thought the synchronizer on 2nd was shot. I called David Kee and he said before I have it rebuilt call the previous owner and ask what lube he used. He said if it has a synthetic the toploader doesn't work right sometimes. I called. He said he had just had his local shop "go through" the transmission, which I remember him saying when I bought it. He called them and they had refilled it with Amsoil FGR. I drained that out and refilled it with dinolude. It got lots better, but not 100% yet. After a few terror runs, I drained the tranny again and refilled with dinolude again. This time it was perfect!

It saved me about a $1,000 avoiding a rebuild, so I'm a believer.

Lots of RR's used TH400 transmissions.
