Ways to fix sucky stereo (2K GT) ???

My "premier" Mach1 setup sucked from day 1. I'm not sure if it's the speakers or the reciever itself. Did anyone drop in a new stereo and can tell me which model matches my 2K Mustang. I'm not willing to spend crazy $$$ but a few hundred is doable. As far as the speakers, what brand/model is common???

Thanks in Advance Roger

So what sucks about it?

The Mach460 in my 03 GT has poor door speakers (really stressed sounding when turned up due to bass notes). I set to rear seat speaker mode. Some sound still comes through the front, but it is not stressed as much. Replacing the front door speakers may help a lot. John

  1. Bass does not exist at all

  1. I notice whole tracks missing when playing CDs/radio. For example, I know some tunes by heart and know when guitar and drum breaks take place. Listening to them trough the Mach POS system seems like someone edited the tracks out completely! EQ and balance settings don't do dick. Could it be some wires got loose? I don't even know how to check. I'm 6"3 and can barely get into the car in the first place, forget climbing behind the console like I used to do in my 74 Caprice.

Mine has very good bass. That is relative, of course. If you expect to have bass like those with the trunk full of woofers, than no it doesn't. I consider the bass to be good and clean.

If wires had worked loose, I'd suspect speaker(s) to not be working. Turn the sound low and put your ear to each one to be sure it is operating.

Does your stereo of the DSP button with the funky sound modes? If so, it could set to one of those modes like "news" or "jazz".

6'3"! I'm 5'8" and when I lean forward, my head hits the visor and sitting normally, there is barely 2" of space. I often wonder how anyone taller than 6' can get in the thing.

This sounds familiar for some reason... I remember another post where someone changed out a head unit and had the same problem. He had one of the rear speakers polarity reversed. That will definitely kill the bass and cancel any sounds that have equal balance L to R. Did you purchase the car new and has it been like this since new? Did you buy it used and has it been like this since you bought it? Has any work been done requiring a door panel to be removed, or back deck? could you have bumped a wire back by the amp's in the trunk? The MACH 460's not going to win any sound-off competitions but it's not a bad every day system. It doesn't handle deep or prolonged bass very well at higher volumes. This can be fixed for most listeners by adding a subwoofer, a single 10" self powered bazooka in the trunk is a simple solution.

I have a 94 with Mach 460. I replaced the head unit with a sony and it was a night and day difference. I still plan on adding a sub, but a new head unit is well worth the money. Get the plug in adapter for the wires, no cutting required. I believe cutchfield throws them in for free if you buy the head unit from them.
