Why Is Mustang Losing Sales Race?

More views on why the Mustang is losing the sales race...

With all the news of the Ford Mustang talking a growing permanent spot of second place in the Muscle Car wars, a lot of mainstream publications are bagging on the Stang. There is no question that the Ford Pony=92s clock is being cleaned by the Camaro, and being strongly nipped at by the Challenger that was once a laughing stock in the marketplace.

Many ask the question. Why?

Well obviously the Camaro has gravity behind it for a lot of reasons but not because it=92s the better car. Image wise, it=92s newer and doesn=92t have near as much recent baggage in the public arena. Most of our readers are aware of the all new powertrains in 2011, and the all new interior Mustang got in 2010 which really raised the bar. But many people not reading car magazines or internet publications still think of the Mustang as that old rental car with a noisy V6, lame looking posture and a cheap plastic interior.

Add the fact that the Camaro is getting so much TV and movie time lately with Hawaii 5.0 and Transformers you got the whole secondary influence thing going with car buyers. Spouses and kids alike are chiming in at the dinner table about how cool the Camaro is they saw on the big screen. Chevrolet is of course cashing in on this with the

2012 Transformer=92s edition and commercials to go along with it.

Which reminds me=85=85when is the last time you saw a Mustang commercial on TV? When is the last time you saw a current Mustang placed in a movie or television show? Ford actually had the Mustang 5.0 placed in the pilot episode of Hawaii 5.0. But for some reason GM played the better hand with the TV studios, because the show is wall-to-wall Chevrolets now. Someone at Ford didn=92t get the deal done.

But really, let=92s look at the car itself. We are Mustang faithful here but it=92s time to be honest. Yes the platform is getting long in tooth, but the Mustang is every bit competitive to the Camaro in virtually every statistical measure. Most magazines that have compared the two grade the Mustang higher all around for better feel, handling, comfort and value. But the Camaro still sells almost twice as much.

One thing Ford could do is spark it up a little. Yeah we got the BOSS

302 that a handful of old rich guys can afford to squirrel away in a nitrogen filled balloon and covet until 2035, but where is the mainstream excitement for the masses? Why all the boring colors? Where is a good plain yellow instead of that weird goldish tri-coat mess? Why not Competition Orange for everyone?

Instead, whenever Ford bangs the drum about some new colors, it=92s a slight variation of some existing dark red, blue, or silver that already exists. Have you seen the all new Lava Red for 2012? It=92s the kind of mud soup that belongs on a Buick. Wake up Dearborn, this isn=92t some Camry that has to appeal to the Consumer Reports crowd!

Lastly, the Mustang has just gotten too damn expensive. Yeah everything has gone up. But in all the great work Ford has done to improve every aspect of the Mustang in the past decade they are pushing it close into BMW territory when you get a GT and a nice load of options. Where is a true base model? You would think in these times Ford would have thought to offer a model below the current =93base=94 than its current loaded up starting point. People have clamored for an LX or GTS equivalent, but nothing to answer that market has come along since the mid 1990=92s.

And while a Mustang V6 can be optioned to sticker well over $30,000 Ford insists on continuing to style it like the lesser breed. It has a more demure if not lame look that screams to the world, =93I didn=92t buy the V8=94. You can buy a V6 Camaro that looks exactly like a V8 SS, wheels, body and all without the embarrassment in the bull ring. Even the new Hyundai Genesis Coupe in base 4-cylinder trim is every bit as mean and cool looing as the V6. In fact, you can=92t hardly tell them apart visually.

While Ford is busy looking a couple years to the future for Mustang=92s replacement in 2014-2015, it would benefit them to at least look toward the current Mustang and offer up some simple affordable excitement, some special editions, and a few simple bright colors instead of $1500 rebates. Spend some marketing money and get one placed in a movie or TV show. And puuuh-leez,=85. do not put MyFord Touch in the Mustang.

I'm not in the market to buy, but if I was, I think I would wait till they fixed the look of the back end. That and some better looking wheels.

both need weight off, and quieter mufflers, let the aftermarket do the loud ones.

It is very simple. Camaro is 'new' and there hadn't been one for many years. Camaro will eventually exhaust pent-up demand.

Well you know the old adage, "Punch robots in the face on Sunday, Sell on Monday." GM CEO Dan Akerson would fellate Bumblebee if he could, and possibly even give up his "dark side".... Let's face it, this is the best movie tie-in since Elliot lured an alien with peanut butter filled candies that looked a lot like M&M's painted in fall colors rather than pastels.

The other key factor is Ford's V6 engine shortage. With $4 a gallon gas, 60% of Camaros sold are V6's. No doubt with the new 305 HP six, Mustang would sell at a similar ratio; however less than 55% Mustang produced have the wonderful 3.7L mill. That might not seem significant, but 5% of 100k is another 5000 Mustangs...and how many V6 Camaro sales would be a Mustang instead if dealers weren't so lean in supply of cheap Mustangs?

There's currently less than a 30-day supply of V6 Mustangs, less than half the inventory of the old V6. Obviously Ford needs to boost its

3.7L Duratec production, but with so many being funneled to Ford's cornerstone F-150, prepare to listen Camaro fanboys gloat about winning the sales race for quite a while.

Add to this gloomy production reality the fact that enough people are aware Ford is primed to celebrate Mustang's 50th Anniversary in a big way...likely a way that will annoy enthusiasts but thrill the masses. After Transformers 5 or 6, Bumblebee will be a bit long in the tooth and the property will mercifully go into hiatus until Paramount gets desperate for money and produces another "reboot". The Camaro's aggressive angular chop top show-car styling will start to look dated, it's coolness no longer able to compensate for the fact that an M1 tank has better visibility. And thus the circle of life and ever- changing Mustang-Camaro pendulum will swing back to Ford. And then we here can gloat for a while...and hope for a sweet cross-promotion.

P.S. Do I hear Indiana Jones running from the aliens that built the pyramids in '64=BD Fastback? Maybe James Bond 24 will feature a 2014 Mach 1 that flies? A Mustangesque hovercraft on Pandora? For the love of baby Jesus, Ford needs to do something because clearly sensible ergonomics and glowing expert reviews mean little when it comes to moving muscle cars!

A Boss 429 on dealership allocation.... that will do it... :)

I swear to god - I did NOT buy a '93 GT convertible because I saw one in the music video for Crazy.

And I didn't buy a sweet black on black '06 GT Premium Coupe 5 speed because of the I'll-fated Knight Rider 2000...none of us passionate enough about Mustangs to spend time on this usenet are swayed by such. But the masses are. The masses (or Ford bean counters' perception thereof) nearly turned the front driven four banger Probe into a Mustang!

And with $4 gas & boosted sixes approaching 400 HP off the showroom floor, I fear the masses' tastes may soon spell doom for the glorious Ford V8. How sad that day will be! All this talk of the next Mustang being a "world car" scares the bejesus out of me. But no doubt sales will increase dramatically as soon as the 2014 Mustang is suddenly newer than the Camaro. But I'd certainly prefer the wonderfully & tastefully retro styled current gen Mustang to enjoy a few more years in the sun even if just because it too punched robots in the face on the big screen.

Agreed! I just can't get past the rear end on the 2010+ Mustang... I loved my 2005 Mustang, but opted for the 2010 Camaro, due to that horrid rear end on the Mustang...

and when will that be? Heard that same argument last year... "Once the 5.0 become widely available... Mustang will outsell the Camaro..." I see 5.0s sitting on all the dealer lots now... still the Camaro is outselling... ???

V6 Camaro doesn't have the front "mail slot", so it doesn't look like a SS from the front. There is also a difference with the lower part of the front fascia...

I agree on both, a supercharger on my '07 is a more viable choice over a new ugly 5.0 I have the polished 18" aluminum, then and now the wheel choices still are not great.

Thanks for the info! Hadn't see that yet.... going to be interesting to see how the rest of the year plays out.

I agree, thats the route I went. My 05 is paid for and is now supercharged so I am perfectly happy to stay with that. I am on the lookout for a wrecked

5.0 to get the engine though.

My local dealer has no 2011 Mustangs, 1 2012 GT vert, 1 2012 GT500, 1

2012 V6 and a Boss 302 on order.

I like the 2010 and up better myself... at least at the moment. :)

The mufflers/exhaust on these new 5.0 Mustangs are extremely quiet. In fact, so quiet the induction sound is MUCH louder than the exhaust note.

You may be correct. This past month Mustang sales edged past the Camaro.
