I don't know all vehicles. I'm glad my 280Z uses a thermostat and not a mixing door. I guess he needs to take it to get fixed if he is not doing it himself, in which case he should be able to troubleshoot it. There might be a blockage or even freezeup.

Seems like most American vehcles use that stupid mixing door with a fixed thermostat setting. The control on my car is actually a thermostat. Well, to tell you the truth, my air has not worked for many years. My freon leaks out through the compressor I think. Probably need a new compressor and freon type change.

when it does cool, there are NO bubbles through the sight glass. when it stops colling, the compressor still turns but it seems as though there is no drag to the engine. as if there is a vavle that cuts off the pressure???? maybe.... and also, when it stops cooling (comp. clutch engaged) no flo is seen through the sight glass... I can easly reach the avaporator behind the glove box, when it cools, you can feel it is very COLD, when it stops, ZILCH. the vents all work ok, I have tried that...up, down....def. etc...

The only problem is lack of (NON dealer) PRO Nissan Repair mechanics. In Miami, Florida We use to have several Nissan shops, Z-Specialist, Japanese Edge. just to name a few. now I can't find any in the yellow pages or thru word of mouth.

I'm currently replacing the drivers side (left) electric window motor. I DEALERS list prive on Z32 (ZX 90-96) electric window motor (just the motor, not the reg. or assembly) is over $500.00 !!!!!!!! never mind the labor.

I dont mind taking (paying) it to a mechanic for the AC, I just dont want ANYONE fiddling with my Z ;-)

thanks dave

Dave,

My 91 N/A has the exact same problem--the previous owner charged it with freon and replaced the compressor trying to fix the problem--but it still does the same thing--10-20 minutes of ice cold air followed by warm air. If I shut it off for 3-5 minutes it cools again with no problem for another

10-20 minutes. I suspect a sensor problem and am trying to track it down myself. If you find out what is wrong with yours please share the info with me too.

If you haven't aleady checked--go to twinturbo.net and search for a/c diagnostics. There might be a way to track the sensors on a 90 (the 91 has a built-in diagnostic).

Sounds like its freezing up. Is there ice on the lines when it stops cooling? Does it start cooling again after the ice melts?

If there are no bubbles in the sight glass, it is either over charged or empty. There should be occasional bubbles in a properly charged R-12 system. Put the gauges on it and see if it is in spec.
