'88 Pathfinder

Hello.. Got an '88 Pathfinder SE 5-speed... just a couple minor issues... The back-up lights do not work, replaced bulbs.. checked fuse ect.. any ideas where to look? Also, the horn does not work, was working once in a while, now not at all... fuse is good ect.. Thanks for any help.. B.R.

There is a switch on the transmission that turns the backup lights on. Get a good service manual, find out where the switch is and then bridge it with a jumper. If the lights come on you know it's the switch. Note that you may need the ignition on to perform this test. You can either replace the switch, or put a switch on your dash to turn them on manually. Also note that lazy mechanics sometimes don't reconnect all the connectors when they do transmission work, so it simply may need plugging back in.

Hook a voltmeter where the horn is and have someone press the horn button - If you get 12 volts you know its the horn - Just go to the wrecking yard to get a new one. Or, disconnect the horn(s) and send it (them) 12 volts (alligator clips on the battery) to see if it beeps. If it does, you know it's a wiring problem.
