98 Nissan Sentra hard to start when hot

Hi all,

I am having problem with my Nissan Sentra GXE about 85k miles. Problem is when it is hot outside and driving for short distance like week end shopping. After 3-4 stop/start situations car wouldn't start. I have seen that if I hit the gas during startup it would start OK.

I am sure others also have experienced similar problem, any idea what could be possibly wrong with the car. Just to add this car has passed the emission test.

Thanks,

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "hit the gas". Nissan recommended procedure for hot starting my Pulsar (probably same engine) is to hold the pedal right to the floor until it starts.

His Sentra is feul injected, so no need to hit the gas or floor the gas pedal to start the car, cold or hot.

As for the issue, carnvperson, have you tried cleaning the throttle body? Or maybe the idle air control valve needs adjustment. Clean the throttle body 1st and see how it goes.

It's more complicated than that. Nissans like mine have smart ECUs, which interpret the full-throttle start as an instruction to adjust the total fuel quantity for hot-start conditions. They electronically mimic the effect of holding the carby butterfly wide open.

OK. I stand corrected.

also, if you have a leaky injector, holding the pedal to the floor will help burn off the excess fuel.
