my mom has a 98 sentra and the air conditioner only works when it wants to, the compressor clicks on and off randomly and only runs while you're accelerating, anyone got any idea why?

When you say runs, do you mean cools? Or is it that the compressor only kicks in when you accelerate?
I can imagine the system being low in refrigerant.
