Frontier vs. Tacoma

All--

Waffling between the two, w/ auto, 4x4. Leaning toward the Frontier, as the cash rebate is pretty good, has a crewcab+long bed, nice styling. But some mechanic friends say toyotas are in general better built, altho I'm sure others would say the opposite--just haven't met those friends yet! In Consumer's Report, altho both rate high in reliability (a primary concern of mine), Toyota does seem to edge nissan out. Did anyone else wrestle with this, or other decisions? What went in to your decision? Plus, nissan's site makes locating "your" car pretty straightforward! Don't think Toyota has this, altho I'm not the britest Web bulb...

The Frontier is pretty damn reliable and has the long bed to boot. I also like it because you can get it with a manual tranny - not so in the crew cab toyota. The bed also seems to be stouter than the Toyotas.

You can order the Froniter without the goofy roof rack and running boards and save $750. I just bought a 5 speed, crew cab, 4x4 w/o the aforementioned stuff for $20,900 out the door w/ rebates. I put a set of

31" LTX M/S on the stock rims and it looks significantly better. Also, the 6'-3" bed in the Frontier is longer than all of the compact and many of the full size crew cab truck beds. Unfortunately, this will be the last of the compact trucks with full length beds. It may also be one of the last that has a lever for putting it in 4WD instead of the malfunction prone electric systems.

Nissan trucks last for ever thats why I drive a 02 frontier xe :) a guy at work drives a 12 year old nissan hardbody with 350,000 miles on it!!

I now own a 2003 Frontier. Prior to that, I had a 1994 Nissan "Hardbody" Pickup. I had 225,000+ miles. I got into too many accidents and the insurance company said it was not worth the repairs. In addition to Body work, I would have had to put $ 2500. into the engine and other things. But even with that the truck was still going!

Agreed. My little 94 with 4 cyl. would not quit! I loved that truck. I've been looking for a small truck for a while now, and everything I look at is compared to my little red Nissan. I can do without a lot of cosmetic details (didn't even have A/C on my 94, which made it hard when I moved to Texas), but everything nowadays looks so plastic. Now that I'm back in PA, I can do without A/C, but I need that 4wd (ah, the trade-offs). :)

I've been looking at the new '05 Frontier, hoping they stand up to the old ones' reliability. Will be waiting, impatiently, to see.
