Gaskets vs RTV sealant

I'm preparing to change out my timing chain following the directions from my Haynes repair manual. It talks about using a silicone RTV sealant instead of gaskets in various places throughout the repair. What it's not clear on, is which RTV to use. Most of the places around here carry Permatex brand RTV Blue for medium-heat use and Permatex Red RTV for high-heat use. The gaskets I have to replace are the timing chain cover, oil pan cover, thermostat cover and manifold gaskets if I decide I need to get a valve job done when I take off the cylinder head.

Any suggestions on which kind to use or other brands that might work better. Thanks...Tony

Make SURE you use O2 sensor safe sealer. I use ultra copper high temp for almost everything but the ultra grey works well and isn't as "ugly" if you care about that. I've never cared for the blue and had VERY bad luck with the black sealers.

BTW you don't need to remove the head to deal with the chain cover, just slide the cover off the front of the engine and reglue the head gasket to the top of the cover.

Thanks for the tip, I've found a lot of fans for the copper and grey out there in the Nissan world. Any reason why you would recommend the copper over the grey? As for removing the head to change the timing chain, after much research here and on another Nissan forum, it appears my Haynes manual was leading me down the wrong path. But hey, I was glad to find it was wrong and am greatful that I don't have to mess with taking the head off.

You only need one type for any application. The high temp will work in any application where the grey won't deal with high temp uses. The only advantage grey has in my opinion is it matches the color of aluminum so doesn't look as obvious on transmission cases etc.
