Ideas for roof-top carrier for gas, spare tire, etc?

Anyone got any ideas/comments in regards to building(or buying) a rooftop carrier for a 92 Pathfinder? It would be used for things like a second spare tire, a gas can, etc., when going on long trips, especially to remote areas.

I was thinking of building it out of something like Aluminum, to keep weight down, and if I keep it low profile by using something like

1.5 inch angle, the truck should still be able to get into parking garages when driving around town.

Here's a photo of the truck:

thought was to have an aluminum frame, with an expanded mesh'floor', and the whole thing would attach to the existing roofracks, which are very sturdy, via some U bolys, so it couldbe removed fairly easily.

Thanks Chuck, but.....

1) I'm looking to make something myself :-) 2) The yakima.com website is a fine example of how "not to do things" ont he WWW - it 'requires' Flash, and when not using FLash, the 'home page' is essentially blank - generally, a sign that the website's designers don't know what they are, or should be, doing.

Hi Dave

roofracks something similar to what you describe, are often used here in Australia for 4wds that do genuine outback driving, extra spare wheels and fuel being common, but also small dingy boats with outboard motors etc for fishing buffs and folks who like to get around, in the far North, during the Monsoonal Wet season

Good idea of yours to keep it as low as possible, for 'round town driving/garages etc. However if it's completely removable then that'd save even more on your petrol/diesel fuel costs, when not in use simply take it completely off

The large Aussie ones (available at many many roof-rack and towbar supply and fitting shops) would also, almost always have a small ladder incorporated into them, makes getting up on top w-a-y easier, eh ! So keep this in mind when making your own rack

cheers
